I have a blackberry that was given to me by work. They specifically took away the cable so that I couldnt install software. I guess the don't know about OTA install.

If I were to install OTA, would they be able to tell? No one sees my handheld but me, and I have an unlimited data plan, but I was wondering if I installed Berry411 or others, would they be able to see it?

Simple answer is yes. You may alsobe unable to install any apps, depending on the IT policy set on the handheld.

Now with that being said, if I were to use verichat, would they be able to read the messages? or Log them? Or anything like that.

The IT guy who gave it to me, said he logs into yahoo chat via the website to chat, and that was ok. But I am considering verichat to communicate with the family when I am on the road..

Not sure about Verichat, but All phone calls (including the name in your address book) PIN messages, and SMS messages can/are logged as well.

Gotta love security (or lack of) by omission. Who is to say you won't get another cable? What if you want to charge your BlackBerry from work, but don't want to carry the charger with you to and from work every day?

I guess I shouldn't knock them too much. I have been their situation before where we didn't have the ability to enforce a policy the proper way. You have to make do the best you can.

I have also seen people drive the IT people nuts by doing what they were not surposed to be able to do!

Thanks for the replies.. I appreciate your knowledge. I thougt it was odd to take the cable as well since I could have just purchases a replacement cable, but since my job is good to me, I will follow the policy. I kinda like the regular paycheck.. It comes in handy when the mortgage is due..
