I sure one of the Nextel experts will chime in about the SMS but you should be made aware if you use a BlackBerry on the Nextel network with no data plan it will be added to your account by Nextel. The do not allow for BlackBerry's with no data plan on their network.

The 7510 can receive text messages even without a texting plan. I should know, that's what I used to have at work it is worked just fine (I used to have hotmail send me a SMS everytime I got a new hotmail email).

The 7520 can receive SMS - same as a 7510.

I received text messages when I had my Nextel 7510 and I still receive them with my 7520. I was not able to REPLY as an SMS though and had to reply using e-mail. As well, when you receive SMS, you have no idea where they are coming from because they do not show the sender's phone number. E-mail is definitely the preferred method of comunnication if you have your berry through Nextel.

As well, I'm sure you know what you're up to but I assume you have a voice plan on your Bberry? If you have both the voice plan and the data plan, you will receive a $5 discount making it approx $34.99 for the 5MB plan and $44.99 for the Unlimited. I do not know how much you text but you have "pay-as-you-go" text messaging with that $10.00 data plan and that's scary. I eat 500 texts for breakfast. You're already paying $10 and you could 1. Be legit 2. Not need to worry about counting messages 3. Have the benefits of the BIS e-mail service - which surely you must be missing and a whole bunch of stuff I'm not smart enough to figure out all for an additional $24.99 or $34.99. Not to mention that the first month you receive over 250 messages (not a lot when you get rolling), you've already negated the benefits of circumventing the system with your $10 plan.

Just food for thought...

I was told by Nextel that the Nextel 7510 use not able to send or receive text messages. And the problem with SMS is there not considered text messages so when u send them to someone else they'll get charged so that'll be stupid. I use the net and email heavily also, so for me to get the 5mb data plan would be jus senseless. Ixxx8217;m going over to sprint for a PPC. Nextel data plans are way to much. Ixxx8217;m an 18 yo student. So paying $110.00 on one phone bill is jus crazy. Especially since Sprint, T-mobile, and Verizon data plans are cheaper. Thatxxx8217;s jus how I feel about the whole thing.

Texting will only work if you have a bb data plan with Nextel, since texting uses the email system. I tried going around this with a friend that had a 7100i, and what happened was that after removing the bb data plan he lost the ability to send text messages (the error in the phone being: "No message services configured. You will only be able to send draft."). Nextel does this in order to get all BlackBerry users on their network to have a data plan.

You can always go to the tmobile sidekick! I just can stand the cartoon figures on the screen. It is cheap and does texting very well from what I hear. Nextel is not for you.

MMS does work with 7520 you just need the new 4.1 software version on it. also might have to contact nextel to work that 7520 for mms.

No one explained exactly how to text message. My Nextel i860 broke so I got a Blackberry 7520. I did a lot of text messaging with my i860, I must know how to text message with the 7520. I am already thinking about getting rid of it after using it for a day and finding out to have AIM, send email and browse the web cost $50 compared to my i860 being $10. I can't understand that.

Were is the detailed info on how to text message my wife's i860, or my brothers Cingular phone?

That helps a bit, but what about the friends I don't know who there carrier is? I was just hypothetically saying I knew my brothers carrier, I don't. I have no idea who is on what.
I thought this Blackberry would make it easy. So far it's harder. I want to text there number like I always did.

Not necessarily, you should be able to text their nbr, I send texts/sms to nbrs only and they work fine. Let me explain this a little bit:
Say your brother is on Cingular and you have his nbr in your address book. You're in the message module and you highlight today's date>click the scrollwheel>compose sms>your brother's name>your brother's mobile nbr if he has more than one nbr listed in your address book. Type your message and send. Can't be harder than that.
Whoops, looks like I overlooked the fact that this is Nextel we're talking about. From what I've understood, when you're on Nextel, you have to send an email to get around the text message problem. The odd thing about this though, I had a co-worker text me all the time from her nextel phone (not a bb) and it worked fine. What changed?

I have no SMS option to send anything. What is SMS?

My options are:

Compose Email
Compose PIN (this is only BB to BB? Right?)
Place Call
Compose MMS (don't know what this is and it doesn't work)

Now the big question (to those on Nextel) Will I get others Text Messages? If NO, who want's to buy a Nextel BB 7520 in good shape $120 Shipped no SIM card?

EDIT

This is all the info on SMS in my manual.

Code:
About SMS Messages
SMS is the abbreviation for "Short Message Service". In short it is a
means to send a text message via the cellular network to a cell phone.
The message has a limitation of 160 characters.
Open SMS messages
An unopened SMS message appears in the messages list with a closed
italic envelope icon. After you open the message, the closed italic
envelope changes to an open italic envelope.

I was able to view the message about 12 hours later. Now I seem to be getting all my messages and am able to send a TM. I have to send a "Compose MMS" for it to work. At least I think it works I know replying to a TM works perfect I did find this forum thread (still can't post a link) Thread #731 Sending SMS messages via email for free in North America!

I had the same problem last week and found out there was a problem with text messages on the Nextel system last week and the first part of this week. As best I can tell they got it fixed on Wednesday night.

Nextel is having an issue with their MMS messenging since last Saturday. And as to date is works on and off but don't rely on it for a sure way of communication. To test just send out a MMS amd if you get the red "X" it isn't working. Every so often do a master reset (pull out the battery) to see if that helps. If not you can always call CS and ask if there still is an outage.

Well my MMS worked from Wednesday to this morning when I noticed it was down again. I just spent 30 minutes on the phone with Tier 2 support trying to get them to start a ticket so that I can go to Tier 3 for help. Let's see how long it I sit in the que for Tier 3 this morning.
