| First of all, of course the battery can die, especially on handhelds like the Blackberry. Even when you shut a handheld off, it still has functions running like date, time, calendar, and alarms. No matter what, the phone will die whether it takes one or two weeks.
As far as the Network Update, maybe it only uses the network to keep current on a certain cycle like once a day. Let's say it checks every day at midnight, if you turn it on at eight in the morning, it's not time to check the network. Next time, try not manually updating the time and date for one day and see if the phone fixes itself within that day.
