Default Yahoo Messenger on BB - Are the charges for usages?

Please Login to Remove!

Hi,

I have a collegue who actively uses Yahoo Messenger on the Blackberry. Does anyone know of if there is any official outline if the carrier actually charges for these messages sent/received on the Yahoo Messenger?. We are on BES by the way. I initially thought the messages sent/received were via our MDS which is our data service or am I wrong?

Yea everything works off your data. I don't know anything about BES and im no BIS expert but if its like BIS then as long as you have the data plan you should be ok to send and recive all you want without any extra costs

You are fine, there is no extra charge as long as you have some sort of data plan which you do if you are using BES then you are fine.

Well it depends on what yahoo messenger program you are using. The TMob. OZ messenger uses text messages.

The yahoo messenger that you can download via OTA or DTM from bb themselves uses data only.

I have used both extensively the past few weeks and the bb version of ym is way better than the OZ version.

If you use the OZ IM software from tmobile it uses sms. If u use YM! from RIM(http://www.blackberry.com/yahoodownload) then it uses data.

any IM software from RIM website only uses data. if you are cingular user, you are screwed hehehhee

OK.....related to this....

My 7105T came with Yahoo, MSN, AIM, and ICQ all pre-installed like all the other newer berrys do.

Of course, I am not an any BES plan, just standard T-Mobile data plan. If I use the services that were pre-installed, does this cost me extra, or is it all part of the "data" portion of my plan? Also, I pay the extra money to have unlimited texting on my plan (for the kids and non-BB friends).

I just want to know if this is going to cost me extra to use ANY of them.

I don't think I'm going to say it any better than the way it has been said on this thread already, but the app you describe which came native on your 7105t sends and receives as text message (SMS). If you haven't bought a SMS plan, you'll be paying something ($0.05?) for each one you send, and the same again when you receive. [update: I should have wrote "probably sends and receives as text message"... this is the way it was on 7100t I had until a few months back. I assume it is still the same.]

The Yahoo Messenger app that you download from RIM uses data. If you are on unlimited data plan, you will not be charged; if not, data used will count against your limit.

Hope I didn't confuse things further.

Great, thanks...and yes...you clarified it. I suspect since I pay extra for unlimited text messages on my plan, it would be ok to use either one without fear of an extra fee being involved.

At any rate...I just downloaded from the link above to be on the safe side.

Also....I assume same for MSN and the other native chat features...they all use SMS (MSN, ICQ, AIM)
