Default Tethered Modem vs. Wifi

Please Login to Remove!

Hi,

Just curious the types of experiences those have had using the tethered modem. Is it even near the speed of wifi? How about the reliability. I'm specifically trying to compare wifi in hotels/airports vs. tethered modem to determine if the tethered modem capabilities are something I need.

Please let me know what phone/network you were using.

Thanks.
Frank

WiFi when available will almost always be faster then a cellular provided data connection. You can't really compare the 2. If given the choice, i would always choose WiFi. I use a 8700c on the Cingular network. I pay for the tether charge. In some spots, i will get 1 - 2 Mb/s up and down. In other spots, im lucky is i get 60 kbs up and down.
With WiFi, the only restriction is the amount of bandwidth the WiFi provider is allotting to the users. Most hotels i have stayed in over the last year it was usually around 3 -4 Mb/s

It depends on which BlackBerry you have. If your BlackBerry is BroadBand capable then your speeds are going to be very good. If not, expect slower than 56k transfer speeds. What BlackBerry do you have?
