Default Cingular requiring a SIM upgrade?

Please Login to Remove!

I got a letter in the mail the other day saying that they need to me come in and get a new 64k SIM card. Did anyone else get a letter like this, and what is this for?

Are you on the old AT&T network? From what I read in the news not long ago, Cingular is trying to force people off the old AT&T network and onto the the Cingular network.

Is it possible that you're originally an AT&T customer? I understand that Cingular is trying to get old AT&T customers with 32k SIMs to move to a true Cingular SIM.

If you'd like to save yourself a trip to a Cingular store, you should be able to have Cingular mail you a SIM (no charge for this) and you can then call Cingular's tech support and ask to do a SIM card swap over the phone.

No I had at&t, but then my phone broke right after the merger...so I got a Cingular 64k sim card and everything on my phone says Cingular. When I ask the sales people they told me that in order to take advantage of the recent network upgrades..you need to get a newer SIM card..I guess they say I'll have better coverage. This shouldent affect me being hooked up to my BES ..because the PIN is phone specific..not SIM specific.

I think Cingular's database they use to mail these letters is not completely up to date. I got a new phone and new SIM card to replace the old 32K card weeks ago and I still got the letter, so I'm going to ignore it.

There were first-generation and second-generation SIM cards. I had a Cingular 64k SIM in my 7290, which I got in March of 2005, and then last month when I got my new 8700c my sales rep said she had to replace my 64k SIM with a newer one because they changed them a little bit in order to take advantage of new network features or something. She thinks it was actually EDGE, that the original 64k SIM I had couldn't connect to the EDGE network, but she wasn't sure about that. But she said there definitely was a difference between the 64k SIM I had and the new one in my 8700c.

So if you got your Cingular 64k SIM right after the merger (which is about when I got mine), then you probably have the old SIM like I did. Just ask them to mail you a new one.

Absolutely ridiculous.

An old, 32K SIM (white/orange color scheme, pre-merger circa September 2002)
works just fine in my brand-spanking new 7130c.

And yes, Virginia, I do get EDGE speeds on an old SIM.

I believe it's because of the cingular/t-mobile shared towers issue in California and Nevada. I think they are trying to get people new sims because they won't have the old cingular/pacbell network too much longer. (I heard 2007, but who really knows.) Everybody will eventually be only on the old attws network out that way.
