Default USB Charging: Device Manager vs. Desktop Software

Please Login to Remove!

Can BlackBerry devices be charged via USB with only the Device Manager installed or must the full Desktop Software package be installed?

Device Manager works just as well as the full Desktop Manager for charging via USB. All that is really needed is the drivers and both install them.

Are you certain? RIM documentation led to to believe that RIM drivers were necessary for the recognition and subsequent charging of BlackBerry devices via USB. I posted this thread as my device did not appear to be charging when connected to a USB hub. It may have been because:

"If the BlackBerry device is one of multiple devices attached to a bus-powered USB hub, the device cannot obtain the full power required to charge within the expected time frame. the BlackBerry device is one of multiple devices attached to a bus-powered USB hub [as] the device cannot obtain the full power required to charge within the expected time frame. The device requires 500 milliamperes to charge within the expected time. This amount can only be reached if the USB drivers are installed with the BlackBerry Desktop Software and present on the personal computer. If these drivers are not installed, only 100mA is provided, resulting in slower charge times." - BlackBerry Technical Knowledge Center

I may have been deceived by a slow trickle charge that left my device sitting at 95% for a full 15 minutes. Can anyone else verify that Blackberry devices can be charged via USB sans the installation of either BlackBerry Desktop or BlackBerry Device Manager (regardless of the number of devices on the USB hub)?

It depends on what version of Windows you are running. XP SP2 had an update last summer/fall that removed the drivers if the desktop software - or device manager - were not installed.

This says, without drivers it will be slower.
It's much slower than wall charging, but it works.

This is incorrect. I've installed this update on several machines with no problem. I have, however, had one machine where once I installed it, the BlackBerry would reboot after about a minute!

You don't even need any drivers if you're willing to put up with XP complaining that you've got an unknown device plugged in - the BB will still charge.

It is true. I was in the middle of a rollout upgrading desktop and hh software at the same time new computers were distributed. We were about a week behind the computer deployment with the bb upgrades. Half way through the rollout the bbs stopped charging when connected via usb to any computer (desktop or laptop) with out device manager or desktop manager AND we saw batterys get drained instead of charging. I have seen others post this on this forum as well. The first half of the rollout bbs charged just fine until we caught up with the handheld and desktop upgrade then the morning after windows updates were released to our users the blackberries stopped charging.

Is there anyway possible to receive a full powered charge WITHOUT installing Desktop Manager software?

Just plug it in. The device will charge without software installation. Installing the software only speeds up the charging.

I understand that, but what I'm asking is if there's a way to achieve that same fast charge without installing Desktop Manager software.

To achieve the same speed charge, you'll need two drivers: RimUsb.sys & RimUsbNT.inf
