Why do we need an invitation to gmail? Can't anyone just go to Google and sign up for free?

i wasn't aware of that. I know you used to have to be invited, and i've too many invitations to know what to do with.

I think you still have to be invited or let them send you an SMS. I just did the SMS when I wanted an account.

Nope, you just need a cell phone number to sign up. After you enter your information Google sends you the invite code to your cell phone. I've signed up with a number of Google Mail accounts this way.

Go to gmail-dot-com and click the link " Sign up for Gmail using your mobile phone"
