Default Foreign carrier SIM card swap

My daughter will be travelling to MEX in a couple of weeks and she will be using my old BB 7100t (unlocked) for voice/text.

I bot a TelCel SIM card for her so she will have a local number down there and avoid roaming charges. (Of course this new SIM card is not BB-enabled).

Here is the deal- I popped it into my wife's unlocked MOT v300 (on TMO net) last night and it showed it to be connected to the TelCel net but when I popped it into the 7100t that my daughter will be using down there it showed "Searching for Network" on the home screen.

I'm sure it will connect to the TelCel net once she arrives in MEX but I just thought it was a bit strange that the wife's MOT v300 connected to the TelCel net and the 7100t did NOT???
