new BB user .... wondering how often the OS is updated, and if there is a way to be notified when it happens.

For the most part, you have to wait until your carrier tests and releases the OS for use on their devices. Most of the differences between builds is for carrier specific customizations. Version 4.1 is the higest major release available. When 5.0 comes out it will be all over this, and every other BlackBerry related forum.

5.0 should be out around 2025.

Most of the OS upgrades are 4.1.x so maybe 4.2 will be out soon. But don't bet on it, especially if you have Cingular!!! HA!
