Exclamation New Nokia E61 vs. RIM BB 8700 Series

Please Login to Remove!

Hey, guys, this is absolutely not a BB bashing post, as I really like BB's (even though I do not personally own one), but I was wondering what BB followers thought about the new Nokia E61 (<--- link) from the Nokia business E-Series.

It's the same form factor with a QUERTY k/b, also includes WiFi, WCDMA, Class 11 GPRS, infrared, double the talk time, 24-bit (16 million) colors (as opposed to 65K), 75MB RAM (as opposed to 64MB), supports many more Bluetooth profiles, etc. (Side note: If you buy the version Cingular is about to release, you'll find WiFi, WCDMA and the 900 MHz band are crippled... typical!)

Also, not only does it support BlackBerry Connect, but also other push e-mail solutions: Intellisync Wireless Email, GoodLink, Seven Always-On Mail and Visto.

Having all that and more to offer on top of RIM's alternative, I would honestly say the number of reasons to stay with BB gets reduced and most of the remaining reasons will be related to brand loyalty and preference on looks and the BB operating system as opposed to Symbiam Series 60.

Please give me your feedback.

P.S. The E61 can also be had for a lot less (<--- link) than the 8700.

Hey, thanks for the link to the other post. Unfortunately, it's mostly about issues some users have had with the E61 (some who have admitedly used it for 2 weeks, are probably coming from a BB and haven't read the manual... 2 different worlds and there's always a learning curve).

I was looking for that forum and couldn't find it, so I posted here in the General BlackBerry Discussion forum. Maybe a moderator can move it if he/she finds that other forum more appropriate, eventhough this is a comparison between a BlackBerry and a non-RIM device.

My opinion,

You obviously like the nokia more, and since your the one spending the money, you should buy what you want.

I hear you, but it's not about what I will be getting. I am not planning on getting either. I just wanted to hear/read people's opinions when it comes to comparing these two devices, even though I understand they might be biased in a BB forum.

If you ask what I will be getting (which you didn't *LOL*), that would be the E70 or one of these two.

OK i could tell you i've sold to nokia 9300's that have both been exchanged for blackberry 8700's. The series 60 phones are more difficult to use, and dont support redirector.

There's absolutely no comparison between the 9300 or 9500 Series phones and the E61. Check out the specs. I would take a BB 8700 over the 9300/9500 any day. Now, the E61... THAT's a different story.

Wirelessly posted (Cingular 7130c: BlackBerry7130/4.1.0 Profile/MIDP-2.0 Configuration/CLDC-1.1 VendorID/102)

Then maybe I'm the wrong person for this discussion. I've never had any expirience with the e61. Here I thought the 9300 would be quite similar.

Nope. The 9300/9500 have a different form factor and, what's more important, no push e-mail. The E61 is the direct competitor of the BB 8700, while --I would say-- the Sony-Ericsson M600 (see here and here) is the direct competitor of the BB 7100.

I know the 9300 has blackberry connect. I'm looking at the box right now.

You are absolutely right. I stand corrected.

I still think the 9300/9500 are not direct competitors of the 8700. Maybe they where somewhat of a threat for previous generation BB's, but nothing serious. However, I think the E61 will be a tough fight for RIM against their 8700.

Regardless of the capabilities of the E61, which do seem formidable, the fact remains that the Blackberry is entrenched from a broad corporate deployment perspective, and that can prove hard to overcome. (IMO, of course.)

I couldn't agree with you more and that's what I was referring to when I spoke about the only remaining reasons people would take the BB before the E61. Loyalty and resilience.

You do realize that, as a corporation, you do not have to change your back-end in order to support the E61 with BlackBerry Connect, right? It's almost the same as incorporating a new BB in your network.

It's still going to be hard to convince the corporate world that its that simple. To them it's different. If its not broke, dont fix it type thinking will probably play a major role in that competition.

I went to PhoneScoop and did a quick comparison of the 8700 vs. e61. I'm very impressed with the e61 and if I wasn't waiting for the Blackberry Pearl then I'd really consider the e61.

Wireless (not Bluetooth, but via the cellular network) is a big plus in the Blackberry's favor IMO. In fact, there are a number of Exchange integration features that just won't exist on BB Connect devices, IIRC. For BIS users it's probably no big deal.

It's going to take some serious convincing on behalf of the Nokia side of the board to get me to switch as my Blackberries have always been rock solid. There have been "Blackberry killers" announced time and time and time and time and time again (hopefully that gets the point across) but I have yet to see a Blackberry killer with teeth. Maybe the E61 will do it this time but I seriously doubt it.

I own both and the Blackberry is faser/more responsive which is nice. I also like the threading of SMS messages. Filtering support, hot keys, and jog dial of the Blackberry.

The BB OS also seems much more navigable. If you dont need any extra apps the BB is king!

Just my 02 cents.

I bought and sold my E61 after it failed its proof of concept test. The E61 is VERY slow and the OS is very layered making it hard to do anything quickly. The web browser and radio are amazing but it the end it just can not perform like my 8700.......
