To use the Desktop Redirector, do you need a BES data plan or will a BIS data plan suffice?

Answer is NO.. do the search on forums -

Have done many searches, but have not seen the specific issue of whether the redirector requires BES services. In fact, I'm not even sure (though I am assuming) your answer of no pertains to whether the BIS plan will suffice.

You will be able to use the BIS plan only - no need to pay extra for BES (if your carrier does charge extra for this)

just know that it's only for use w/ Exchange accounts (and not through VPN); it needs to always be running and connected to the internet to work; and you won't be able to get attachments

Please pardon the search quip, that statement should not have been made to you. As for your problem...BERDucky definitely addressed it. No need for BES.

Thanks for the help! I'm with Sprint and they don't distinguish between BES and BIS service, but I have a friend who just went Cingular. They told her that she requires the BES plan, which apparently isn't the case if she's simply using the redirector. To add additional uncertainty, when installing the redirector in the BB Desktop Tools, it actually tells you to select the "BES" option if you want to use the redirector.

For carriers with two tiered service, you require the more expensive BES option if you want to use redirector. For single tier carriers (Verizon comes to mind) they may not differentiate.

NJBlackberry, we've had this same discussion before...NO you do NOT need the more expensive option on Cingular, which is a carrier with two tiers of BlackBerry service. The basic $29.99 BIS BlackBerry plan works fine for redirector. I know, I use it. So do several of my coworkers.
