Evdo

So I used a laptop today that had a EVDO aircard. MY GOD that is FAST... It is pretty amazing. Now I have to see if I can get my hands on a EDGE aircard, or an EDGE BB tethered to a laptop, to compare the speed.

That will help me decide if I will jump ship to Cingular, or wait for Sprint to come out with a new BB.

Sprint seems to always be late when it comes to getting the new blackberry's. Which is why I didn't wait before and just went to Cingular.

I have heard that EVDO is faster than EDGE hands down. I think I heard the EVDO coverage is just flakey.

NJBlackBerry 08-17-2006 06:18 PM

No comparison; EVDO is much faster than EDGE. I have an EVDO card for my laptop and coverage is great.

Milkman 08-17-2006 06:23 PM

Sigh. That is really disappointing. Unfortunately the only EVDO coverage in my area is Sprint. TMO has coverage but it is considerably south where coverage works...

Sprint is REALLY ticking me off, but before I make the final decision, I need to check out EDGE, and see how "slow" it really is.

We use Verizon EVDO cards for our laptops, and they're pretty sweet. Spotty in places, but coverage is overall pretty good.

Milkman 08-17-2006 07:07 PM

VZN and TMO coverage maps look very similar, and have insufficient coverage in my area. Plus VZN seems to have about the same Blackberry selection as Sprint, and I don't feel like going through the unlock process.

Why are these cell phone companies so slow about getting on the wagon. It is REALLY discouraging.

I use my 7130 (sprint) for a modem and its pretty fast. Definitly faster than dial up. Im right on top of interstate 75 so im in good coverage when it comes to EVDO.

Milkman 08-17-2006 07:49 PM

yeah, I have EVDO coverage in my area with Sprint, but no choice of QWERTY BB's (I already have a 7520, so I don't feel like purchasing a 7250).

So is the VZ EVDO that good. I am so tempted to jumpt to an 8703 in a few months for tethering.

This question always cracks me up...I TOTALLY agree, but you gotta remember that we're in, like, the upper 5% of consumers for this stuff. Trust me, if the demand was as high for the other 95% as it is for us, this stuff would find its way to market quicker.

Ya just gotta accept that we're nerds...we like new-and-now. :)

Putting that fact aside (because I agree with you), I also think there are a lot of legitimate business people out there that feel the same way we do.

Benefit of Sprint BB tethering is that it is FREE. VZ will charge an additional $15.00 to tether your BB.

I've ran some speed tests to compare the speeds with EDGE (T-Mobile) versus EVDO (Verizon) and what people have said is correct. There is no comparison. EVDO is hands-down FASTER than EDGE. There's a huge difference between the two.

Speed Tests can vary depending on location but the end-result should be the same to some degree or another. BTW, both where tethered to my laptop.

EDGE (T-Mobile) 20 kb/s upload and 142 kb/s download

EVDO (Verizon) 123 kb/s upload and 854 kb/s download
