i want to get it up and running and use the beast. is it bad to start using the phone before i fully charge it, say for 8hrs or something?

I never wait either. Never had any issues with battery longevity either.

Wirelessly posted (NakedBerry: BlackBerry7250/4.1.0 Profile/MIDP-2.0 Configuration/CLDC-1.1 VendorID/104)
Go ahead a start enjoying it. Giving batteries a full first charge was important with NiMh batteries, but not lithium batteries.

I never ever let my phones charge the full time. It was so hard to wait. Good to know about the battery information. Never knew that.
