Default '*' and '#' characters for IVR

How does one insert '*' and '#' characters in response to prompts received when dialing phone numbers with IVR? I have tried holding down Alt and Alt +Cap without success. I can see the correct character displayed, but it is not transmitted.

on my 7250, I just hit the "a" button for the asterick (*) and "q" for the pound (#). I don't hit any other buttons. The system recognizes that I am in phone mode and passes along the correct DTMF tone.
