Default I got to thinking

Please Login to Remove!

I know, a dangerous thing, but nevertheless, I started to ponder something...

More and more websites are popping up where all you have to do is enter your phone number, and the site sends you a link to an app, or hell, even ringtones. Then there are the websites where you upload something (like a ringtone) and then point your BBB to a link, enter a little code, and presto! the ringtone is there.

Now, my pondering took me to wonder how many of these websites will aggregate phone numbers, and sell them to junk mailers? I mean, in todays age, you don't need an email address. Just a phone number, and you can send as many junk messages as you want.

Do members of our fine forums know of any confirmed sites that won't sell phone numbers to marketers? (Yeah, I know, calling Spammers "marketers" is like calling a 50 Cal BMG a sidearm. )

Our forum doesn't have a privacy notice that I can find. From the FAQ section they state:
"Entering your email address will not leave you open to 'spam', as you can choose to hide your email address, and messages sent to you via email do not reveal your address to the sender in any case. (To verify this, you can try sending an email message to another user.) The administrator may have configured the forum to send you the final part of the registration process by email, so ensure that the email address you provide is valid and working."
Looks nice and kosher but it does not officially state that they will never sell your info.

I do know that spammers use bots to harvest email addresses from lots of different forums. I wonder how long until they start doing it with our PIN numbers?

Oh, I'm not worried about this forum in particular. I'm worried about sites like handmark software. They want you to enter your phone number, and they send you a download link. I checked out their Privacy stuff, but there is no mention of what they do with phone numbers. The whole Privacy text a kinda vague for these guys.

I hate spam. Be it in my email, or in a can.

And I agree with you good Sir. Makes one wonder how long before our PINs are snatched up by some eager bot.
