Default International SMS

I'm trying to send a tm to a friend's mobile phone in France and have been completely unsuccessful, even though he can text me. His number starts with "06." I have tried everything, +33, leaving off the first 0, leaving on the first 0, adding a 1 (with and without the 0). This has all been at the advice of T-Mobile reps who seem at a total loss. They have suggested I use his city code, although it's a mobile area code and that seems unnecassary. Any ideas?

I have an 8700g and BIS, if that matters. Thanks.

Sorry I have to ask the obvious question, have you tried to simply reply to his txt? It also sounds like you've already talked with the T-mobile person but I couldn't txt to New Zealand until I enabled my int'l call feature on my phone (even though I was just sending a txt)... my experience with help desks has been to never trust the first person you talk with in the call center - double check that you have the int'l plan set up properly.

Thanks, Ken. No worries, yes, I did but that was a no go either.

I don't have an International plan; I just have the data plan. Does that mean I can't send Int'l texts? I've spoken with 4 T-Mobile reps already and none of them said that but you're absolutely right, I should ask about that.

Edited to add, I just called and I should have the ability to sent Int'l SMS on the plan I have.

I too have the 8700g with BIS and the unlimited dataplan, and can send SMSs to friends and family in Singapore and India without a problem. I just use the appropriate country code - 91 for India, 65 for Singapore - followed by the number. It 'just worked'. I do not think the international plan is the issue. I did once have a problem trying to send to a number, but I had the person send me an SMS, added it to the address book and then sent a response using the addressbook - it worked ever since.

Thanks. That's just freaky. And you just used the plus in the beginning before the country code, that is, alt O?

Actually it works either way. One of the numbers I use to Singapore has a + before it, the rest do not. Didn't make any difference - SMSs went out either way. I don't have the international plan; as far as I understand it's only necessary when you travel outside yourself, not to contact others outside the US. Check with the person whether they are really sending messages from their phone or some web portal; their using email to SMS will make it impossible for you to respond to them - it has to come from their phone.

It should work if you use the format '+33 6 xxxxxx'. What error do you get (or does it just not arrive)?

I live in Paris part time. Here is the format to call a mobile phone in France:
011 33 6XXXXXXXX
Hope this helps.

drop the first 0, start with + country code and then the phone number without the 0. If it doesn't connest it's your provider you'll need an international plan. The 0 is only for in country.

If you don't have an international plan the sms should work but maybe no for phone calls. That Jabah.com is pretty cool.

Thanks for your answers.

Jax, it just doesn't arrive. It actually says delivered.

STL, I think that's for phoning from a land line though, right?

Stewson, that's exactly what I'm doing, but alas, no luck.

So it seems he can text my phone which is Virgin Mobile (which can't send Int'l SMS), but not the T-Mobile Blackberry. So trying to respond to his tm won't work.

Thanks, Stl. I tried it but still no luck. I cannot imagine what the problem is.

I will give this one last shot. 011 (international code) 33 (France country code) and then the number. On the previous post, I was in error. All land lines to Paris start with 1 or 01 (city code). You drop the 0 if you are calling from out of the country. All cell phones start with 6 or 06. The same dialing sequence holds. If you are in US and dialing a mobile number in France, it is 011 33 6 and the rest of the number.

Thanks so much for keeping at this, stl. It's a mobile number and I've tried:

+33 06
+33 6
011 06
011 6
+011 06
+011 6

Nothing works. I am wondering if it's something between the two carriers as he can't SMS me either, whereas he could with my phone from a different carrier. I'll give T-mobile another call and see if that could be the issue.

Thanks again.

Default got it!

ok! I think I have your solution.

From a land line,

Dial 011 [then wait for a half second]
Dial 33 [then wait for another half second]
Then continue with the rest of your number starting with 6....

I had this happen the other day dialing the UK from Orange County - don't know why it didn't occur to me earlier.

Cheers!

Well since you are a tmo you should be able to simply reply the message that you received and everything should be fine. You do not need an International plan for that per se. I can send sms to Turkey, Germany and Poland with no problems. This has something to do with your line, tmo needs to fix it

+CountrycodeServiceprovidercodePhonenumber should do it.

what you can also try is to search for the email to sms service for his/her provider (this could even be better as it will be free on your side). Google his/her carrier to see if they support email to sms. What I mean is; if you send an email to [email address], it will arrive as an sms to that user's phone. Some EU cariers do have the same service...
