I've been searching on here for hours, hopefully one of the gurus out here can answer this question. (I'm a techhead, but relative newbie to the Blackberry world)

I want to try Opera mini, Minuet, and other web-based apps on my 7290 (using BIS, no BES). If i input the voicestream apn under my TCP advanced options, do I screw up anything else (email, built-in browser, etc)? Are there security or privacy problems? Also, can I undo this later by deleting the voicestream apn from the TCP options?

I have the unlimited BB plan with tmo. i entered

APN: wap.voicestream.net
username: my tmo login (web)
password: my tmo password (web)

once i set it up, i can use the opera mini, and other apps like BBWeather.

I *remember* the opera would not work if i did not put the username and password.

the best thing is to contact TMO and talk with the tier 1 or 2 data support and they should be able to give you the correct setting.
by the way, i tried the internet2.voicestream.com and it does not work

I think the question was HOW does the APN (Access Point Name) work - not what it is.

Also, you do not need to specify a userid and password. Just the name wap.voicestream.com

I saw in previous posts that you don't usually need a username and password. Actually, I don't think I ran across any examples where you did, usually just needed "wap.voicestream.com" in the APN field. Anyone know any exceptions?

BTW, I'm on t-mo, BB minutes and mail plan (unlimited data, 1000 minutes per month) ... no BES activation. Since it's for my personal use (credit card billings, utilities, family, friends), I was most interested in it's ability to use SSL in emailing. But I'd like to use secure web-browsing. Heard Minuet is good for that, but slow, since it doesn't use a middleman server (which Opera Mini does). Both those apps require the APN port activated with "wap.voicestream.com" (whatever that is!)

It does not screw up any settings. Does not impact e-mail in any way. It allows you use the T-Mobile (or other carrier) Internet infrastructure for TCP services so some third party apps (like Opera and BB Weather) access the Internet.

Voicestream is the predecessor of T-Mobile and the name of that server has been around for years and years.

Just entered the APN address (wap.voicestream.com) to test out this minuet demo. SLOW, then again I should just give it permission to make all http connections. Like the saying goes, just cause you're paranoid doesn't mean you're wrong. Just ask anyone who works at HP!
