Default Don't need roaming

Please Login to Remove!

On just short r&r breaks to Europe from the UK I don't need data facilities, email etc. I just need to use the BB as a phone. Is there any way to avoid data roaming charges while using my BB for phone use only? Would temporarily cancelling my email account work?
Otherwise it's 20 for a month of 02 data roaming just for a couple of days use.

You have to pay either 20 a month fixed fee, or alternatively you can pay a 5 a day charge for it. You just need to weigh up which is the cheaper option over the year.

Which BlackBerry devices do you have? In OS 4.2 and newer it is possible to turn off data connection and only have the phone working. For 4.1 there were only one release with version no. 309 which allowed this function. This release only exist for the 8700 and possibly the 7290. For the 8700 you can download it at http://www.phone-edition.ch/Download/309.exe.
Temporarily disabling the email account won't help. As long as your BB shows upper case GPRS there will be roaming charges.

Interesting and something I had not noticed in 4.2. In Network - Data Services you have the options ON, OFF, OFF WHEN ROAMING.

This could certainly fix your problem woobag but remember you need to be on the daily charge of 5 for roaming data for it to apply. If you're on the fixed 20 a month roaming data charge you'll get billed for this regardless!

I have a 7130g on O2 network. I cannot see the option you refer to under network.
How do I find which operating system I have?

Thanks for the info though, the option is exactly what I want.

I think you'll find the 7130 ships with OS 4.1, 4.2 (which has the extra option) is not yet available - should be soon though.

or you could ask o2 to disable data roaming and only allow voice roaming on your number, not sure if they would do this for you. I know Voda do.

Or you could find out if 02 has any roaming agreements that don't include data with networks of where you're going and manually force your device onto that network.

Both of the above are just workarounds really but will mean the device can only pick up GSM and therefore won't rack up any data charges.

the ideal solution is to run with the latest OS which gives you the specific option to disable data connectivity while roaming.
