Cingular has a UMTS (3G) network running in some locations. It is not rolled out and it will not work with any existing BlackBerrys.

they are new sim cards that are designed to work with new 3G phones like the Samsung CU300. Blackberrys, like NJ said, arent packing the punch as of yet.

Not exactly.

Most people on this planet know 3G as W-CDMA and UMTS, not EVDO and 1x.

That is the actual 3GSM spec for 3G.

I would take 3G over EVDO anytime. The ability to fall back to EDGE. Priceless. Sprint and Verizon can take EVDO and shove it.

Corey,

EVDO devices fall back to 1x when needed as well. Similar, no?

How do you classify if EVDO is 3G or not? Isn't one key feature of 3G is simultaneous voice and data? Can EVDO do simultaneous voice and data?

The only question is when? That's why I wanted HSDPA on the 8800.

As much as I'd like to believe that some guy on a BBS somewhere knows more than the entire UMTS/3G working group, I have to say that the people who came up with the 3G specification may know more about it.

http://www.umtsworld.com/technology/technology.htm

Just because the marketroids at Verizon and Sprint say that EVDO is "3G", doesn't make it so.

Not going to happen on the 8800, from my RIM rep. According to him the HSDPA radio is not ready for primetime, yet. So it won't meet the 8800 time line.

3G, UMTS and WCDMA Technology page from UMTS World

But a quote from the same link does.....
cdma2000 specification and information page

Cdma2000 1x EV-DO and cdma2000 3x are an ITU-approved, IMT-2000 (3G) standards. Cdma2000 3x is part of what the ITU has termed IMT-2000 CDMA MC (Multi Carrier). It uses less that 5 MHz spectrum (3x 1.25 MHz channels) to give speeds of over 2 Mbps. Cdma2000 1x with lower data speed is considered to be a 2.5G technology

The second statement is where to confusion lies, but EV-DO is considered 3G while 1X is not

I have a really hard time swallowing that a network deployed in 2? 3? Countries is 3G. On the other hand, I don't see any dual-mode UMTS2100/1900 handsets coming anytime soon.

The 8707 is UMTS 2100MHz-capable. But alas, will not work on UMTS in North America....
