We are looking at deploying the Blackberry's. Can you tell me a) Does the enterprise version (the free version(1 user licence, i know)) have the option to apply IT policies, b) work with exchange 2000.

How does the enterprise server actually connect out to the wireless network and to the exchange box?

Yes. BES Express has the same IT Policies and options as the full BES. The only limitation is on the maximum number of seats (15 users).

BES is installed inside your firewall and connects to your Exchange server through your internal network. A connection to the Internet is required to reach the outside environment and, eventually, the wireless network. There is a huge amount of literature available on the RIM Website that outlines the BES architecture at various levels of detail.

And how does the replication of the calendars and tasks etc in users mailboxes work?

What do you mean by how does it work? Assuming you meet the prerequisites for wireless sync, it works really well.
