Well I just have Gmail forwarded to my BB address. Kinda the same thing and you get to read the e-mail. But it does cost to do so on your data plan.

No, there aren't.

So what's the point of it again? No notification? Odd.

It's not designed specifically for Blackberry. It's designed for mobile phones that don't offer push technology in e-mail.

I'd suggest deleting the app, logging into your BIS, and setting up the account there.

Are you able to delete email from the Gmail servers with BIS? I thought that was one of the main benefits of the new mobile gmail.

Accessing your Gmail account via BIS is a lot easier than you'd think. I used it prior to joining a BES Service.

Login to Gmail
Select 'Setting & Preferences' at the top of the screen
Click 'Pop & Forwarding' at the top of the screen
Set 'Pop Access' to On and choose the option you'd like
Set your post-access preference (e.g. Archive Gmails Copy)
Click 'Save'

Then....
Login to your BIS Account (Google service provider name followed by Blackberry Login Page
Click 'Add Account' and type in your Gmail Login Info.
Press 'OK'

After that you should soon start getting your emails. If you don't, you may want to check these forums for troubleshooting tips.

Good Luck! And feel free to PIN me if you have any unresolved issues.

Yes, you can delete from the BIS, but that's all you can do. You can't mark emails as read, archive them, tag them, or star them. For all these things, the Gmail Mobile app is the way to go.

Wirelessly posted (7130e: BlackBerry7130e/4.1.0 Profile/MIDP-2.0 Configuration/CLDC-1.1 VendorID/105)

You do have the option of leaving your gmail on the server. At least I think you can.
