I have several Blackberries, and I would like to convert a 957 to an 857 (so I can use it with a pop account). Can I use programmer.exe to plop on an 857.bin? Is that all I would need to do?

Sorry, I usually only use RIMS on a corporate LAN...

Huh? No.
The major difference between an 857 and a 957 is the network carrier.
