Default Viewing Excel attachment problem

Please Login to Remove!

Hi, first time poster. I've searched but could not find anything regarding the issue I am having.

We have 25 BB 7750s using BES 4.0. Users are receiving Excel(.xls) attachments and when they try and open the attachments they are sometimes receiving "unrecognized document format" messages. I asked one of them to forward the email to myself. Instead of opening the document from within Outlook I saved it on my hard drive. I then opened it and did a "save as". I noticed the "save as type" was populated with Microsoft Excel 2.1 Worksheet. I'm assuming that is how the document was originally saved. I changed it to Excel 97-2003, etc and saved the file. I then emailed it to my BB and was able to open the attachment.

Can the BB's not open all excel attachments? Is there something we are doing wrong?

Thanks

I'll see if I can duplicate it from work tomorrow, but it doesn't look like it supports older excel formats. Might want to tell your users to save it in a more up-to-date format if possible.

Ok, some more info. The excel file is being created using an application called Brio. Brio is saving the document in an old excel format for compatability reasons, hence the 2.1 version.

Are these files that are constantly updated through this Brio package after they are sent?

If not, I suppose it would be possible to create some kind of windows script to convert them to a newer excel format (manually run by the user I guess before attaching), so they can be readable on a BB.

If they are updated by the same program after receiving, then I guess pass out a similar script that users will run everytime they attach it.

An ugly solution I know, but beats not being able to open it at all I guess...

Not really sure how this brio program works. I think it queries our SQL servers, gathers data, and puts it into excel format so it can be read. We're going to talk to our guy tomorrow about how these things are getting generated. The script idea may work, or maybe there is an updated version of Brio or some way of having this version save it in a better format.
