Thumbs down Nextel 7520 Busy in Data Problems

Please Login to Remove!

I believe there may be problems with the Nextel 7520 running the 4.0 software. Specifically, when people try to direct connect me, they get the User Busy in Data error more often than not - likewise, phone calls go to voicemail quite often. My belief is that the data communication that the blackberry is doing takes priority over ther phone and direct connect when it should be the other way around. At this point, I'm almost considering a move to another carrier for BB and just getting nextel handheld but that kind of defeats the convenience.

Who else is having these problems???

Me!

I did call Nextel about this - their answer was that it was by design.

Sounds like a significant problem to me. I'd be interested in knowing how other models/carriers and/or the architecture is supposed to deal with this priority issue.... I was under the impression that voice calls always took priority over data on a blackberry but this certainly isnt happening on the 7520 with 4.0.

In my experience voice calls override data operations but DC calls do not. This is true for all Nextel phones, not just BB's.

My understanding is that all BB prioritize data over voice.

My Verizon 7250 does not interrupt data traffic for a voice phone call.

What apps are you running when this happens? I normally just keep a web browser and BBToday open so that's not much traffic, but even when I leave jmIRC open I haven't had complaints.

Personally, I'm not running any apps except the normal BB email and calendar. Occasionally, I'll be using the blackberry browser which definitely interrupts the direct connect service but not always.

The busy in data message happens when the BB is actually sending or receiving packets.

Since the Direct Connect runs over the same packet data as the other data it causes a busy condition if they are in conflict. You can get "BID" even in a DC convo if you let the time out expire on the DC conversation.

When a phone call comes in to your BB it is preceeded by a forward page to the phone/BB letting it know that a call is about to arrive. Because the phone/BB is responsible for certain conditional parameters like signal strength and user settings it may reply to the network that conditions are not favorable for a call and that the call should not terminate at the handset - thus voicemail.

That is a very simplified description... the point is that you should be able to receive a call regardless of packet activity... "Please wait while the Nextel subscriber is located".

So even when you are going back and forth on DC in rapid exchanges this happens? That shouldn't be if it is.

Should only occur after the DC session times out (6 Secs.).

I had the same problem the day after I got my 7520 and I called Nextel BB Data Support and they checked everything and said I should not be having this problem. I was, I told them it was unacceptable. Response was for me to turn off my BB and they would resend the services to my phone. Wait 1 minute them power it back on. I did and it worked. No more BID and I get all calls and DC. Well no one complains of it atleast.

Hope this helps.
