Default For the webcam junkies... remote control your webcam from your BB!

Please Login to Remove!

I am an admitted web cam junkie. (no, not of the porn variety...) Shortly after receiving my 7290 I purchased the Webcam Viewer app and love it. I'm able to view all sorts of web cams from all over the world and even view my own web cam. Well, this wasn't enough for me. I wanted to be able to remotely move my camera around to see all around the room, following the movement of my 4 cats, all from the convenience of my Blackberry. I found EyeSpyFX let's you do this! They have different software versions, depending on the camera model you have. I have a Logitech QuickCam Orbit at the moment, which does work fine but I will be switching to a SmileCam soon due to it's faster speed and the range of movement is MUCH larger than the Orbit.

The software will not "stream" video to your BB, but rather provides an updated .jpg image when you view or refresh the page. The software is pretty easy to set up, with only minor "techie knowledge" needed. You can host your web cam using your own PC (faster but not very secure) or you can use the "reflector service" provided by EyeSpyFX. (slower but more secure) I tried it both ways and didn't noticed much difference. I ultimately decided to host my own cam behind my firewall.

Once everything is set up in the software you are provided with a link to your web cam, complete with all directional links and any preset positions that you've set up. No html knowledge is needed, it's all done for you. To see what the page looks like, see the photos further down. (actual screen shots would be better but I don't know how to do that...) My apologies in advance for the crappy shots.

One of the coolest parts about this software is it's ability to let you create up to 8 preset positions. This makes it easy to just click on the preset link via your BB rather than using repeated clicks on the positional links. (which takes more time and lots of clicks) You'll see what I mean in the photos below.

This is the top of the page. You'll see a link that says "Reload Image". I don't use this much because the BB tends to cache everything. I find using the BB Refresh menu option is more reliable. You also see a time stamp and what I think is supposed to be a date but it's a bit garbled.

After scrolling down a bit you see the full web cam image. (This photo is of the mantel on my fireplace - a favorite kitty hangout)

If you keep scrolling to the bottom you'll see the directional links as well as the preset positions I have set up. They're a bit hard to make out so I put a couple of shots of it. (The preset names can only be up to 8 characters)

The top line has your directional links (Left, Right, Up, Down)
The next line shows my first 4 presets (AmysSpot, Rug, Kitchen, Mantel)
Next line is 2 more presets (Floor, KittyBed)
The last one is a link back to other public webcams on the EyeSpyFX website.

Below is one of my cats in her bed. Yes, I know the photos suck. They look much better in real life, I promise!

You can download a full-featured version of the EyeSpyFX software, specific to your model of camera, so you can get a good idea of how it works before purchasing. You can adjust the size of the image that displays on your BB, which is nice. (That way you can view on a tiny cell phone as well) You can also choose whether to make your camera public for others to view or even have it password protected, which mine is. I think the only thing that is a little annoying is that the BB always caches the pages so you often have to click "refresh" after changing camera positions. Fortunately there is an optional time stamp feature so I can quickly tell if I need to refresh my screen.

I am not affiliated with this company in any way, I just wanted to do this little mini-review because when I was looking for information on how to do this there wasn't much out there to go on.

If you'd like to try it on your BB you can use one of the two links below, which takes you to the EyeSpyFX listing of other public webcams. Unfortuantely, most of them are only tiny images on your BB, I assume because they are formatted for smaller cell phone screens rather than the larger BB screen. It will still give you an idea of what the page looks like though.

WAP Gateway:
http://www.eyespyfx.com/mobile/index.asp
iMode Gateway:
http://www.eyespyfx.com/imode/index.asp

I actually prefer using the iMode gateway link best because it formats the links on the screen a little better. You'll see what I mean if you try them both. If anyone has any questions let me know and I'll be happy to answer the best I can.
Cheers!

hmm..that is kind of cool.

what i wonder is if you use a cam with an alarm system if it would send you a photo, or some how let you know if someone is in an area they should not be.

No problem. Nice to know I'm not the only one with this sickness! Fire away and I'll do my best to answer your questions.

I've got a bunch of links to some other webcams that are not currently part of WebcamViewer if you'd like some. (I love being able to add my own favorites in this program!) Nothing special but fun nonetheless. Just let me know if you're interested and I can post them here.

HI Pixelbrat,

Can you advise which camera(s) you have and what you would recommend? The software is only 30 but I guess you must have a few cameras too?

Ideally I would want to get one of those cameras that can be moved around from the BB - is that possible? Can anyone suggest a camera that can do this?

Andi.

Hi Andi,
Per my original post I currently use the Logitech QuickCam Orbit but will be switching to a SmileCam soon. Both will work with the EyeSpyFX software. Both can be remote controlled by your BB using the method I described.
Hope that helps,
pixelbrat
