Default INSTRUCTIONS FOR ENABLING AN AT&T BLACKBERRY

INSTRUCTIONS FOR ENABLING AN AT&T BLACKBERRY

You cannot transfer your device to Cingular unless you find a way to unlock your device (most of the time which requires you to pay someone to do this) OR you may follow the instructions below:

1. Acquire a new AT&T SIM card. You cannot reassign the current SIM card in the AT&T device to another person. Look for SIM cards at your local AT&T Wireless stores. (Probably renamed to Cingular now -- do not go to a new Cingular store, they cannot help you). These AT&T SIMs are in short supply. Also try searching http://www.ebay.com for "AT&T SIM".

2. Call 888-288-4202. This is a direct AT&T activation number, not customer service. Do not call until you have your new SIM and are ready to activate your account. You will need your drivers license number, social security number, date of birth, home address, home phone, the SIM card number, the AT&T device IMEI number (found on the back of your phone under the battery), and your credit card number. Ask for the unlimited blackberry plan (should be $49.95 a month) and if you do not want to use the blackberry as your phone ask for no data plan (they may have to temporarily assign you a voice plan and then remove it from your account).

The two 7100g's we bought at work came with ATT sim cards even though the devices are Cinguar.
I think the ATT devices will work on Cingular's network. They are, after all, the same company now. I'd call customer service, and they can help straighten it out.

jbairdjr, ALL Cingular devices will work with ATT sims. That's not the problem, and that's not what jeffatvss was talking about. It's ATT devices that won't work with anything but ATT sims, which are hard to come by these days.

Default Thats correct and one additional comment

Consider this scenario -- you have an AT&T phone that has been used by someone else. You want to re-enable that device for a new person. Call Cingular and see what they say -- "Cannot be done, you must buy a new phone". Of course this is true, in order to sign up on a new Cingular plan, you MUST have a new phone. That is all the information they will give you.

Now, following the instructions above, you can use your AT&T phone without throwing it in the trash, which is what most people think their only chioce is after talking to Cingular....

I'm confused. I had an AT&T cell (Motorola), then they converted to Cingular and now the face plate tells me I'm on the Cingular network. I bought a 6210 AT&T Blackberry, just to use as a PDA, but find I'd really like to hook it into my existing cell plan to get e-mail. Anyone have an idea how I can do this? The device was never activated since I didn't buy an activation plan.

Thanks.

Do you have an ATT SIM card?
If you do, you can use the Blackberry as a phone by swapping in the card.
If you want to add the Blackberry data plan, you will have to call customer support to add that to your number.
I have heard of customer support giving people a hard time because they want you to upgrade to a new Blackberry and the Cingular SIM, but they should add it.
We have done this, but we have a government rep that handles it for us.
