What Would Make BlackBerry Better? -
01-13-2007, 08:05 PM
Serious answers only, please. This can be for the devices, the OS, feature-add applications, BlackBerry Enterprise Server, BlackBerry Internet Service, etc. I am going to write an article on your opinions and suggestions for my upcoming blog column and forward the realistic/good suggestions to RIM. Please do not include ideas for legacy devices that simply don't have the hardware expandability built-in for implementation (such as removeable storage in a 8700g, or any other BlackBerry that's not a Pearl or newer). These are to be realistic wish-lists and suggestions.
Mine personal opinions are:
• Feature-add: Full-featured Office application for editing documents on the device (a lot of work needs to be done to the current document viewer, as well)
• Feature-add: Unified IM application (although I suppose individual AIM, MSN clients should be released first)
• BES: Web-based thin-client for management with all the features of desktop-based BlackBerry Manager (planned for post-BES 5.0; previous suggestion of mine)
• OS: The ability to add a Email Filter (not a Category Filter) from within the Address Book / Contact. Seems like a logical inclusion that doesn't appear to be there (unless I'm just overlooking it).
In the beginning the Universe was created. This has made a lot of people very angry and is widely regarded as a bad move.

Wirelessly posted (BlackBerry8703e/4.1.0 Profile/MIDP-2.0 Configuration/CLDC-1.1 VendorID/105)
Deff document viewing and editing programming w/o the need to purchase a subscription to do so.
Removable storage which would allow for data exchange w/o the need to sync.

These are already realities with the Pearl and the 8800 (8900).
The following suggestions are not any Earth shattering inventions but just from the complaints I've seen on here.
1. A way to "sync" emails prior to new activation on BES or BIS.
2. Ability to separate out SMS/MMS and BIS mail from "Messages" folder if desired (mainly BES use.)
3. (This one probably doesn't even need saying but...)Bring back the ability to disable automatic backlight dimming (on 4.2 devices.)
I'll remember more and post back when I'm not sitting forcing myself to remember it all at once.

.vcs and .vcf Import/Export capability
Dual SMS/Email send utility that auto-detects what the user is attempting by what is typed ie - phone number or email addy.
To: fields auto-selection based on either name or phone number or email address entered.
Revert to larger keyboards on QWERTY models.

Thanks for putting that. I have amended my original post with a bit more detail as to legacy devices and suggestions for them.

OS 4.2.1 will atleast allow you to separate SMS/MMS from the Messages folder with a user option - no longer theme dependent. That's a step in the right direction...

That's good to hear...and I'm big on the "if desired." I'd like to have a setting to be able to say, "list BIS messages (or SMS/MMS) in Message folder=yes/no" or something to that effect.

I'd like to see some sort of workable file manager, for easier transfer of such things as backgrounds, ringtones, photos... Not that I do this very often, but it's hard work when I have to (was stunned as a newbie when I found I had to e-mail my own photos to myself to show them on the BB, or purchase additional software like SplashPhoto).

Again, with v4.2 of the handheld OS and the Desktop Manager, the Media Manager option allows you to move ringtones and photos very easily between the device and your PC.

Love to see HTML rendering in email. The ability to turn it on and off would be a plus.
My favorite bugbear, more control over backlight settings.
Bluetooth stereo. I'm not clear as to whether the 8100 has the hardware capability built in to support this in the current generation.
Device reset, without a battery pull. I don't like excessive wear and tear on the flimsy cover tabs.
BTW, thanks for the opportunity.

I find fault not so much with the BB itself (8703e) but with the BB OS. We desperately need increased PIM capabilities which, in my opinion, are essential if one is to put away their Palm of Pocket PC and go strictly with the BB.

Camera, GPS
Other than that, I would like to see my blackberry (BIS) being able to sync with google over the air. And not just calender and email but everything as a replacement for Microsoft Outlook.(Calender, contacts, tasks, memo pad)
Also, I would like to be able to access google spreadsheet thru my phone thru some application like Gmail for Mobile.
Third, I would like it bundled up in a package like Yahoo GO! or something like that which also includes weather, RSS feeds, messenger etc.

This would be a suggestion for Google not RIM, unfortunately. It would be a nice feature.

The ability to RED highlight incomming email messages based on a tag placed on the names in the address book. Would allow quick view of important messages, at least ones important to you.
Increase the number of rings in profile now max at 3 .
Nine ( 9 ) would be better.

Several different messaging highlighting options would be nice -- something like what you could do with Eudora's labels with editable names -- and corresponding alert options (i.e. adding Level 2, Level 3... etc).
I guess I'm just seconding Office file creation/editing, spell check on the device itself, historical mail push/sync and HTML mail rendering.

As of OS 4.2, you can configure Filters for those certain email addresses and set them be marked as Level 1 messages. All of these will come in as RED in the Messages list.

Just to note, for all of you, as mentioned in my original post on this thread, I'm starting a new blog column over at BlackBerryCool.com. My first article (which is, oddly enough, my first commercial blog entry ever) should be published tomorrow. This particular thread will be the source for my second piece (which will hopefully end up being quite elaborate in content and suggestions by the middle of the week, which is when I plan to start writing the article).

Oh! Here are a couple:
1. Ability to create folders, regardless of theme, and organize icons into them.
2. Browser shortcuts as icons (without having to go through the whole browser push channel creation process). There should just be an option to place a bookmark as an icon and to launch it as an app as far as the convenience keys are concerned.

Here are a few:
- Not sure if its carrier specific, but voice activated dialing would be great.
- First to create a cheat screen that displays the letters associated with a number (i.e. 3 = DEF, 4 = GHI etc) and then to have the ability to configure it when it should display.
- Be able to configure which browser to open a link in depending on which email address it was sent to (i.e. BES = Blackberry Browser, BIS = Internet Browser)
If I think of more, I'll post em.

Not sure if this fits the criteria, but the ability to "Flag for Follow Up" when using MS Exchange.

I'll stir up something (don't ask). With that said, you can always send emails to ![[email address]](http://www.blackberryforums.com/?emailimage=c17eb7ed588c2458e546fc78c7009a5b) with any ideas one may have. FWIW, they do monitor this mailbox. Some of the ones listed above are good ideas, while a lot of the others have already been implemented in some capacity.

It is device-specific and has been included in the Pearl (and likely all newer devices).

Why not just stick with holding in ALT and typing the letter? The device will associate the letter with the number for you. So if you want to call RIM support, you'd type in 877BLKBERR and it'll dial 8772552377.

Ahh, understood. But some would argue whether or not you should use your phone while driving. Of course, I'm of the pedigree that likes to pick up something from the rear of my car, driving with one foot, not looking at the road, and typing an email/text message, so...
...and I've only had 11 wrecks.

I agree with a lot of the stuff but I really agree with needing streaming media, like streaming video, audio from internet and it'd be nice for the word editing programs along with wifi hehe.

I'd like to see integrated office applications, more onboard memory, the ability to use desktop manager on a Mac and an IM Client for MSN Messenger so you don't need a third party IM Client.

I want a mobile admin tool I can install on my BB that allows basic BES administration without the need to buy some third party RDP software. I'm only looking for basic features (kill, EA password set, remove user, add user). It seems as a mobile platform RIM have forgotten that admins should have the ability to administer the server from the device!!!

Do you have MDS enabled? If so, why not script these functions around the BRK? Yes, it's a bit of a pain in the arse and should be out-of-the-box (albeit, they rarely have BRK releases that are in-line with BES releases), but it does serve it's purpose.

I second or third the need for a robust built in file manager something like FExplorer for Symbian OS would be great to manage doc , music or vid files especially when the device has limited memory capacity due to lack of SD/mini-SD card slot. Thanks for doing this. can you put in a link for your blog pieces I'd like to read them.
Just trying to get a straight answer in a twisted world.
