Default Verizon EVDO vs. Cingular HSPDA?

Please Login to Remove!

I'm a Verizon 8703e user in New York City. I get great reception everywhere, even in some subway tunnels while in trains. I get fast 1XEV just about everywhere in the metropolitan area. One of my friends, a former Palm Treo user, now a convert to HTC and Windows Pocket PC, seems to be competitive over who has the faster, better device, network, yadda yadda yadda... He now sports an HTC 8525 Hermes and gets HSPDA data in NYC. "I just got 850Kb down in the cab ride over here."

So here's my question, while I know that HSPDA has a few advantages over EVDO, what do the experts in this community have to say about the two technologies? I don't care which one is faster, better, more, less or whatever, but I'm looking for some facts that will simply end the discussion around networks.

Does anyone know of a way to determine the data bandwidth that a BB is using at any time?

And yes, if I wanted a computer, I'd buy a laptop. Since I want a best-of-breed messaging device, I carry a BlackBerry. Those HTC things are nice, but just too much.

I don't, but my experience has been that there's little noticeable difference between EV and 1X digital in day-to-day operation. Both are as fast (or faster) than the BB's processor can render a web page. So, for use with a smartphone/BB, EVDO vs HSPDA is a bit of a moot question.

I agree with mistermix. I don't really see much difference in speed between a BB on EDGE or a hand held device on EV-DO. The device processor, memory and the connection itself really determines how things flow. However, there is a big difference using an aircard since that is built for speed and a laptop which is much more powerful than a hand held.

As for HSPDA, I can't say as it isn't available where I work, live or travel. My guess is that it won't be such a big deal on a hand held.
