Default Gmail and spam

Please Login to Remove!

Lately I have noticed quite a bit of spam going through the Gmail spam filters (although they also catch a good amount as well). The problem is that it gets sent to my Blackberry when new mail comes in. I would set up a filter to prevent it sending to my BB but it comes from all different addresses and would be almost impossible to keep track of. Anyone having this problem with Gmail as well?

From time to time I have the issue...the best thing to do is to report the spam and stay on top of it. EVentually it will taper off. But we are in an age where spam is the norm, so kind of get used to it

I am to the point that I very rarely get any spam though Gmail.
I think it is by far the best a filtering the spam

If you report the email as spam in gmail it will help in the future.

Another alternative is to filter to allow only messages sent directly to you. In most case the majority of spam is sent through BCC so this can prevent delivery to your BB and costing part of your data plan. That said it's not the most ideal option and can prevent any emails your receive through mailing lists.

We are in a state where the percentage of spam on the net is now larger than the percentage of legitimate email and growing. While SMTP remains the way it is (and good luck that changing any time in the near future) you're pretty much stuck.

I'm new here, but I have been using Gmail for a while. I have created filters in my Gmail to forward emails from my work's domain (i.e.: from:workserver.com) and other individuals. It would be nice if Gmail added a checkbox for Is in my Contact List so you could filter with them too. But adding a few filters in Gmail for the people you want to forward to your BlackBerry should work well.

I get about 1-2 spam emails in my GMail inbox per month. Whan I look in the spam filters, I see about 10 msgs per day in there. This is from an unpublished email account, one I never give out. The username is 8 characters and based on my realname. In fact I started getting spam in the account (in the spam folder only, not the inbox) within 30 minutes of setting up the account! This was prior to even using the account. I was stunned, but this was to be expected in 2006.

I use the same username at yahoo, set up on the same day, and started receiving spam to the spam folder, again, prior to even using the account. I get about the same amount slip into my inbox - about 1-2 per month.

Hotmail? What can I say? This is the account I've used as my personal email since 1999. All of my friends use it. My family too. I use it for online shopping as well as about 2 dozen mailing lists. It's mail banking/ebay/paypal address. So it gets plenty of use. How much spam do you think I get? Zero. And that's zero unsolicited messages in my junk folder. You heard me right. I never get any in my hotmail inbox, ever! The only mail that ever hits my junk folder are false positives from store sales (which are borderline spam, but at least ones I've opted for) and the occassional mailing list digest (Information Technology related). Probably 3-10 false positives (of the aforementioned type) per month. Easily dealable since the junk folder has zero spam.

Why the difference? I think it might have to do with one key difference. My yahoo and gmail use a shorter 8 character username based on my name (easily guessable or brute-force guessable by the spammers). My hotmail username is 23 character long and not in any way based on anyone's name. Most people hate to type it in (if only once just to save it to their address book) since it's so long. So some simply won't bother. Maybe the spammers don't either? So for now (past almost 8 years) I get no spam. Before that, I used to use a hotmail account that was 7 characters long, and based on my car with some numbers appended to the end. I'd get 10-30 spams a day, even back then. Sure switching usernames helped, but I think the length might play some part.

Either that or Microsoft has much better antispam tools on their edge servers than Google or Yahoo (something I sort of doubt). ike I said, the spam doesn't even hit my Hotmail's junk folder let alone my inbox.

The funny thing, was I chose a silly long username not to avoid spam (which like most people I accepted as part of life in the '90s), but rather so I'd have an original name without numbers at the end (e.g, funnyguy288). The problem was just about every combination I could think of was in use. So I picked one I thought no one would guess. Turns out I was right.

The one problem I run into is my full email (including the @hotmail.com) is 35 characters, and some web systems won't accept an email address that long when filling out a form (occasionally it'll be 30 char or even 25 char max), which is funny.

So what was that again, roofus?

I run 3 seperate email accounts into GMAIL. I have been using this setup to then forward to my Blackberry.
I havent received a spam message this week, or any of the 4 or prior. Once I got the mail up and running, and flagged a few spam messages, I get literally none.
I get more spam sent directly to my Blackberry BIS email address.
And personal attacks do nothing to foster good discussion. Sometimes it is best to keep some things to yourselves (just my 2 cents)
