If you're asking about speed for device-based applications like email and web browsing, it's pretty much irrelevant. You won't see a significant difference between 1XRTT and EVDO, since there's not a lot of data to move.
If, on the other hand, you're talking about tethering speed, then DSLReports works just fine for that . . . I've benchmarked my connection a number of times (and get, pretty consistently, 900-1100Kb/s downstream and 120-140Kb/s up when in an EVDO area).
