Default Sprint = Clueless on Blackberry?

Please Login to Remove!

I am looking to upgrade my standard phone to a Blackberry.

I e-mailed Sprint asking them what I needed to remove/add to my plan - knowing that there was a 99.999% chance they were going to tell me to get the $40 Data plan.

Well, the .001 chance that other would happen occured. Here is my e-mail from Sprint:

Quote:
Thank you for contacting Sprint together with Nextel Online.

I can definitely inform you what kind of plan you need if you are going to activate a BlackBerry on your phone number.

You will need to purchase a Power Vision pack for the BlackBerry and not a Vision pack (which you have added to the phone number recently).
That is an interesting response from Sprint considering that if I pretend to be a new customer signing up for Blackberry service, I am prompted by this:
Quote:
BlackBerry Data PricingSM
A Data Pack is required to complete your BlackBerry purchase. For a limited time, the Unlimited Data Pack is specially priced at $39.99/mo when you buy a Sprint PCS Voice Plan and a 2-year subscription agreement on the same device. Because of this special pricing, no additional discounts apply.
So, this leads me to believe that Sprint is clueless on Blackberry, which is the prevailing opinion I had before based on reading other member's experiences with Sprint.

I e-mailed them back regarding their error and got this conflicting response:

Quote:
I apologize for my error.

Customer do need to have the BlackBerry Data plan to have a BlackBerry on their phone number.

I have found the following Blackberry plans that must be added to the Blackberry phone when added to a phone number:

- $39.99 for Unlimited MB BlackBerry Promotion (two-year contract)

- $39.99 for 5MB BlackBerry plan (one-year contract)

- $49.99 for Unlimited MB BlackBerry plan (one-year contract)

You have also a $5.00 Unlimited SMS text messaging plan available when purchasing a BlackBerry.

I apologize for the my misinformation that was given to you on my previous email.

At least you knew not to believe them.

Just an FYI, the Cingular BIS plan is $29.99 if you have a voice plan. If you ant to tether or use the Corporate BES, it is higher. I think T-Mobile may have the best rates however.

Most carriers' reps are...

The rule, regardless of carrier is that you have to have a Blackberry data plan. Each carrier specifically names these plans as they are the only plans that offer Blackberry APN access.

I'm stuck with Sprint until 08' (contract renewed in 06'). Also, the Omaha metro area does not carry T-Mobile. The price is inline with to Cingular, Alltel, Verizon and US Cellular.

I knew that I would have to add a Blackberry data plan, so the question I asked the rep was primarily playing dumb. I found the first response indicating that the BIS data plan was unnecessary to be odd.

Considering I am not a real heavy e-mail user that requires the push technology, the BB data plan vs. plans for Treo devices may cause me to take a second look.

I am also in Omaha and on Sprint but have never had any issues with my BB 8703e to warrant going to a store. However, when I first purchased mine the BB representative at Sprint Business Tele-sales was very knowledgeable when I first set it up and I have had no issues since. I have the BB data plan (no powervision that I know of and have not been charged for one either) for $39.95 and I don't tether it to a computer.
