Default Cingular and Blackberry

Please Login to Remove!

My boss wants a BB from Cingular (7100g or 7290). Besides the voice and data plans is there anything else he needs to sign up for through Cingular? He wants to be able to send and receive e-mails and surf the web. He will be traveling in Canada and wants to be able to use it there also. Will he be able to create word or excel documents with the software that comes with the BB from Cingular or will he have to purchase 3rd party software? Is it correct that he will be able to edit word and excel attachments that he receives with e-mails without having 3rd party software? Any help would be appreciated. He wants to purchase today or tomorrow. Thanks!

You can not edit documents with an out of the box BlackBerry. Check out eOffice from http://www.dynoplex.com for attachment editing. I suggest you look into a third party BES (BlackBerry Enterprise Server) provider, like Mailstreet, for the timely forwarding of e-mail.

Thanks for the quick reply NJ. My head is swimming from all I have read in the last two days about BB's. I thought I saw on the BB website that you could edit documents sent to you as attachments to emails with the out of box BB. But you can't do that, huh? He wants to buy one today and be up and running immediately. As far as Cingular is concerned, is there any kind of BB service he will need to sign up for to start using it right away (beside data plan)? I am doing the leg work on this and am not familiar with anything but Cingular voice plans.

You can not edit documents on the BlackBerry without third party software. No question about it.

I am not a Cingular customer - I don't know what their plans are or what additional services you may need. Sorry.

The Cingular website should show two BlackBerry plans:

BlackBerry 4 MB $39.99 or
BlackBerry Unlimited for $49.99

I'd recommend that he go with the unlimited for $10/more.

That plan should cover the surfing that he wants to do, too.

Check their roaming rates for Canada -- it's extra.

And $0.59/minute for voice calls, right?

Unless he signs up for Cingular World Basics, which would make it $3.99/month plus $0.19/min?

Thanks for all the info. Now he has decided to stay with Nextel and get their BB. So I am going to read all the posts about Nextel and the 7520. This is a great forum, thanks!

Does Nextel have roaming in Canada?

I had a 7510 and love it, when I had network coverage. Here in DFW, Nextel coverage is spotty, but I learned to live with it. What did it for me was when I took my 7510 Mexico. I was told by Nextel's Tier 2 support that I would have data coverage. When I arrive in Cancun I found that I had no voice or data service.

The unit itself is solid and the screen is better than the 7100's in sunlight and 7290's in any condition.

Nextel has been charging $0.20/min extra for voice in Canada on his old plan. I have no idea about the data plan since this will be the first time he has had the capability.
