My buddy refuses to message with me because Cingular informed him that BB Messenger uses his text plan. I thought the data plan was used for this service? Can someone clarify which is correct?

It uses the data plan. It goes through RIM's servers and either uses your device PIN or your device blackberry.net email address. No way it can use text.
