Default new 7130e - how to remove blackberry data network access

Please Login to Remove!

Hi folks,
I am a new blackberry 7130e owner and for the time being I do not need the data plan. (I took the blackberry because I will need to use the unlimited data plan in a few months - and since I signed up for 2 year contract, i took a phone that has the capability to check office email etc when I am ready to upgrade to the data plan.)

(Anyways, it was a long hassle with Verizon to get the dataplan not included in the monthly bill.)

This is my question: how do i make sure that my 7130e is not exchanging data with the blackberry network - is there a setting I can use to remove this. Right now I only need the voice network given by Verizon and don't need to access data. (I will be charged on a pay as you go basis and it shows I already used 80 KB and I really dont know what for.) So I am thinking of disabling this data network access.
Any help is appreciated,
Thanks,
JK

I think others have posted that they still get charged for data with Verizon even without the plan.

Some BB's have a setting under >Options >Network to turn off data services. If yours doesn't have that then there's no way to turn off the data.

Without a BB dataplan you should not have access to either Internet or email. Are you sure that you do not have a dataplan?

There is no way that I know of to turn data off, but Iam not a 71xx expert. Someone on here should be able to answe the question correctly however.

Go to Options ---> Advanced Options ---> Service Book and see what you have listed there.

If you have PROVISIONING, IPP, Verizon Wireless WAP, Blackberry Internet Browsing, BBFS1,2 or any email addresses listed, you are capable and WILL get data delivered to your device.

Hi,

Thanks for your replies.

In my options->advanced options -> service book, I see these:
----
All the following are *checked*:

BB Internet browser
IPPP for BIBS
BBFS2 (YHO)
BBFS1
Verizon Wireless (WAP)
Browser config for 5 click
IPPP for 5 click
Provisioning
---

Is there anything I can do to avoid any unnecessary data charges ?

Thanks,
JK

By your service book settings, your BB is set to receive data. I do not know of a way to restrict data itself through your 7103e device, so I would call Verizon and verify you will not be charged for data on a ala cart basis.

Be very careful and good luck.

See my post above. Verizon is sneaky. Been posted here before.

Here is my main question:

There is a 10 MB plan and an unlimited plan. Can I use a decent amount of data using the 10 MB plan? Or should I just go for the unlimited plan?.

if I take teh unlimited one, then I can use my corp email etc. WIth the 10 MB one, I hope I can use the internet once in a while - for occasional maps, 411 etc

More rants below:

Hmm. Before I signed up, on 4 different occasions, I have asked Verizon that I would not need Data services for a couple of months and would just use voice on my BB. And they said that it is okay to do that. And yesterday, I was on the phone for 2 hours talking to 3 different Verizon reps because they put me on the unlimited data plan and said I can not not have a data plan (with at least the 10 MB one) because I will get a huge $$ bill if I don't.

Well, I finally got them to take it off - so i pay as I go (a la carte) now. But, now after the info I obtained here, it appears that all those 2 hours on the phone to get a la carte is of no use - because I AM incurring data charges as we speak. I should have first asked you guys first on these forums instead of asking Verizon. Oh well, something to keep in mind for the next contract!

Sadly, it seems like teh best course of action is to get back on the data plan without much delay because I am in for a 2 year contract that barely started a month ago. (Verizon strategy clearly works!)

I got the 10 MB plan for now.
I'll upgrade to unlimited later on - when needed.

Thanks for your replies on my questions.

regards,
JK
