I just wanted to know what's the difference between GSM and GPRS........ for some reason I'm stuck on GSM and I SHOULD be on GPRS....... is that a network problem also?? Just last week, I had the GPRS being down for over a day (it was stuck on gprs <- Lower case!!) and eventually it came back up.... been fine since then until today around 1:30.... it just stayed on GSM. Is anyone having any problems today???? I'm on the cingular network with a 7290 in the VA area. Thanks!!!

Try a device reset. As far as the differences, that is discussed in the FAQ. Try taking a look at it (or the blackberry handheld pdf distributed by RIM) and you should find all the connection types explained in detail.

Go to options; host routing table; click trackwheel; select "Register Now".

you will receive and email that says you have been registered on Cingulars network and the gsm should change to GPRS.

You can save time in the future by doing a search, it has been discussed before. Hope this helps

FWIW, Cingular's been having off-and-on data problems in South VA (Richmond/Hampton Roads) since last Thursday. Seems a lot better since Monday, but our users will get stuck on gprs (lowercase) for awhile and then it'll switch back to GPRS sometime later.

During that time, "Register Now" would give us the "Registration Sent" confirmation, but nothing ever came back in the messages, even with gprs went to GPRS.

i just had the same problem, i hadnt been receiving emails all day and noticed i was stuck on gsm. shutting it down didnt work, i had to pop the battery to kick it back into gprs.

I finally got back online around 7 or so yesterday evening which meant it was down for about 6 1/2 hours. I tried to do a register now from the HRT but you can't do that when you're on GSM because it's not even on the data connection at all. That's why I was wondering why it would go all the way back to GSM instead of the little gprs........ and yes, Cingular has been having problems the past two weeks. My guess is because they just took over the VA market from Suncom (At&t) and so they're still working out the kinks in the merger...... thus the data connection problems. But hopefully they'll iron it out and these data connection problems will start to subside more consistently. I've tried the reset (both alt-esc-del AND popping the battery back in and out...... won't work when it's stuck on GSM). As far as registering, I knew that you can do that while you're in the small gprs because I had that problem last thursday..... at least you can SEE where to register in the HRT but in this case while on GSM, there's nothing "highlighted" to register on.

I have had a lot of dropped calls or busy signals the past few days as well. I also think that the merger is causing a couple of hickups

We have problems where users can't get a data connection if they travel from one area to another. Also, on occasion, they can't a data connection if staying even if they have been in the same location for an extended time.
