It depends on the carrier and the plan.

BlackBerry Unlimited Add-on Add access to BlackBerry's powerful data functionality to a voice rate plan. The BlackBerry Unlimited Add-on includes unlimited BlackBerry Web Client e-mail and Web browsing.

That's what i have with Tmobile.

The Chat client im using is Yak-on. Does this use data or text message?

I don't see how the carrier matters. Whether you need an SMS package to avoid the per-use charge depends on the IM app. The Yak-on site seems pretty useless in explaining this...

From what I have heard, the carriers treat SMS differently. I know different chat packages tend to do that also. I could be wrong.

You just need a data plan from your operator...
