Please forgive my ignorance. Here is what I want to do:

1. Have a cell phone / Blackberry for phone use in US.
2. Travel to Europe (Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Ireland) and have cell phone / Blackberry for phone use - by using a foreign SIM card.
3. While in Europe be able to access company email (e.g. ).
4. While in Europe be able to browse web and play chess on websites.

Questions:
A. Would a smart phone do all this or do I need a Blackberry?
B. If one puts a foreign SIM card in a BlackBerry, does one still have access to work email and web browsing?
C. I assume I would have a different phone number then with a foreign SIM card that is prepaid.

A. A smart phone should do this.
B. As long as you have a Blackberry data plan on the SIM, yes.
C. Yes. You probably won't find Blackberry data on prepaid, however.

I checked Wikipedia.org and in the article on Smart Phones it list the BlackBerry 8700. So I am confused now. I thought smart phones just has voice plus things like camera, sms, etc. And the BB was a better email / browser device.

Very confusing also when i found the Treo which is a PDA with phone. Aarrgh.

The term smart phone is more and more being applied to blackberry/win mobile devices on the whole. I usually think of a smartphone as a phone/pda phone running windows mobile (this included treo). And Blackberries are their own category in my opinion.

I have no experience with prepaid cards in europe, but I remember there being some threads on that. You might want to do some searching to see if you can even get a prepaid card. And then check compatibility with your carrier/device. I know that I can put any of my bb t-mobile sims in my 8700 and it works just like normal. (I just tested that to be sure)
