I am not familiar with that exact Blackberry, but some carriers require you to have a BB plan to even use the phone. Check into that before doing anything. Also, it depends on what you want out of the phone. If you have a need for a organization device, the blackberry might be worth keeping. If you are looking for a "fun phone" that you can put music and stuff on, the blackberry isn't for you. Without a BB plan, the main purpose of a BB is lost, but it is certainly not rendered useless. We'll need more info on what you plan to use your phone for to better answer your question.

Even without a data plan, blackberries make good devices for SMS conversations.

Note that you won't be able to browse the internet or download e-mail with out a blackberry plan attached to your phone service. Some carriers do let you e-mail to an SMS number like [email address] and in some cases you can reply via an SMS and it will route back to the person that e-mailed you but you are limited to the 160 character cap of an SMS message.

The keyboard in my opinion is great you just type on it as if it were a full sized keyboard and ignore the strange letters it is displaying. When you space, it 95% of the time figured out what word you were typing out.

7100 is a great phone.. I used it for about 2 years.

It's true though, the best thing about the BB is email and security.
But, used just as a phone, it still works great. Typing w/ suretype you can get really fast!

A Cingular Sim card will work on a BB or a standard cell phone from Cingular.
Carriers that don't use a SIM may have you limited to their plans that require a BB plan to use the phone.

Good Luck
