Default Data Plan/Voice Plan

Please Login to Remove!

First, I apologize if this is redundant and already been commented on. I attempted to search through the forums and check out the FAQ, but I was having trouble locating my exact question. I am currently using a Razr but got tired of typing appointments in, typing text messages and all that good stuff from it. Anyways, I decided to upgrade to a blackberry for the full keyboard and better organization. As of right now, my Verizon account has unlimited text messaging and phone usage. I do not currently have any sort of plan that allows me to use v cast or the internet. My question is when I activate my phone, will my phone automatically connect to the internet or receive e-mail. I don't plan on getting a data plan at first and I don't want to be charged for a browser or e-mail that I am not using. I guess I am wondering if activating my phone will alter my plan at all. Do I need to disable anything so that my phone won't connect to the internet. I am assuming I would have to sign up for a data plan to use these features and will not be charged for them otherwise. Is this the correct assumption. Thanks, I appreciate the help!

You don't need to do anything. Activating the phone will not automatically alter your plan, or allow you to use data. You won't be charged for any data usage, because you won't be able to use any data features until you manually add a Blackberry Data Plan by calling Verizon and asking them to add it.

Thanks for the help. I didn't think it would alter my plan, but I just wanted to check.

VZW rep might try to talk you into a data plan.

My cousin went to activate a BlackBerry 8703e at a VZW store. A rep told her she has to have a data plan with the BlackBerry but no data plan is requiredfor a Treo. My cuz ended up taking the 10MB data plan to try it out.

Yeah, I ended up calling this morning and the lady told me that "since it was a blackberry I had to sign up for a data plan." If I'm not going to use the e-mail and browser functions, at least for now, why do I have buy a data plan? I should have stated that I didn't want to use those features but just use the phone features, but I said I'd call back. I wanted the phone purely for it's phone/organizer/text messaging features. Do you think this lady was just trying to push me into a data plan or is it something they require? I know so little about cellular phone plans. Thanks...

Yeah, I am going to call tomorrow (sunday) morning. I will let you guys know what they say. I'm interested to see how it turns out. If I have to get a data plan it's not that big of a deal, I just don't see why I would be forced into getting one if I don't want one quite yet. I'll let y'all know though. Thanks...

I work for VZW and I have tried to activate BB's for customers without a data plan and it would not work. I was told that VZW has some kind of contract with RIM that won't let them activate a BB without data.

No, she wasn't trying to push you into anything. Verizon really does require a data plan for all BBs. I have no idea whether or not that's because of a contract Verizon has with RIM (seems to me if RIM forced this on Verizon, they would have done the same with other carriers).

Oddly enough, with a BB you're required to have a data plan but you aren't required to have a voice plan. With other smartphones (Treos, WM, etc.) you're required to have a voice plan, but you're not required to have a data plan.

In short, if you plan to use the BB at all on the Verizon network, you'll have to have a data plan. You can go with the 10MB plan to save some money. Just watch your usage.

When I talked to the lady initially on the phone she said something about RIM requiring a data plan for the phone to be used and she did suggest the 10 MB plan. However, I sent an e-mail to the Verizon Wireless customer service and the lady responded with the following:

"Yes, it is possible to use the Blackberry device with out a wireless data plan which charges you monthly. Verizon Wireless offers Pay-As-You go data services that will not charge you monthly for Internet connection service. You simply pay .015 cent per kilobyte, if you should decide to connect to the Internet."

I plan on calling back today and trying to set this up to see if I have any better luck. Obviously, I could just bite the bullet and get the data plan as it isn't that much more per month, but I'd like to know that is the case for sure. I'll let you guys know what I hear when I call today. Thanks for the responses though...

The person who sent you the e-mail is dreadfully mistaken. You can not have a pay-as-you-go data account with a BlackBerry. That isn't exclusive to Verizon. No carrier offers pay-as-you-go data for BlackBerry devices. Your only option is what the CR on the phone told you: 10mb plan or unlimited plan.

Having said that, even if it were possible, no way would you want to take the pay-as-you-go data plan with a BlackBerry. You'll run your bill way up, even with incidental use.

My suggestion would be sign up for the 10MB plan and monitor your usage. If you need to upgrade, so be it. If not, awesome.

Yeah, I had thought I read somewhere that pay-as-you-go was not possible with Blackberry's. Thanks for the help...
