Default Unlocked settings question.

Please Login to Remove!

I'm planning on getting my 8100 unlocked by Tmobile and switching to Cingular.

With non-smart phones, you must go to the manufacturer's website (Samsung, motorola, nokia, etc) and send a specific service provider's (Tmobile, Cingular, Etc) settings to be able to use the phone for internet browsing, email, and MMS.

Would I need to do this through RIM, or would it automatically give me the new settings once I add on Cingular's BIS plan?

Any past experiences would be very helpful, thanks!

I'm on Rogers in Canada and there is an option from within my webmail account to "send service book". the description is "if you're having problems sending and receiving email, send the service book to your handheld".

could that be something similar to what you're referring to?

is there an option like that somewhere in your webmail pages?

Service books handle all this for all BB's. They're sent automatically when your BB registers itself on the carrier's wireless network. In some cases, you have to manually have them sent. If you're on BIS only you might need the new carrier's TCP settings for 3rd party apps but that's it.

Be sure to delete your BIS account with your prior carrier. Closing your wireless account does not do this.

Thanks for the info, how would I go about deleting my BIS account?

Call your carrier.

So removing the BIS plan from my cell phone plan automatically removes the account?

Also, what if someone forgot to do this? Would the pearl be unusable for whoever uses it next?

I just bought a red pearl from a friend, I'm going to switch my SIM into that one. Is there anything I need to do to remove the BIS account from my old pearl?

I would call your carrier and make sure that your pin and IMEI have been removed from their BIS system and are free to use on another account. Yes, it can, and does, cause many problems for the next user.

Oh, so the account is linked to the PIN and the IMEI, not the SIM!

I get it now, thanks for clearing that up. The pearl is my first BB.

Is there any way to do this without calling customer service? Cingular/AT&T Customer Service closed hours ago, I believe.

Edit: I also want to add the account to my new Pearl.

I just thought of something: If I placed my SIM into the new pearl, wouldn't the BIS server update automatically with the new PIN and IMEI?

I assume a wipe with JL_CMDER and reloading the BB OS wouldn't work, since the settings are saved on the BIS Server.. correct?

All correct. If you insert your sim you'll still need to go to "setup internet email" or similar on the BB. I think it will ask if you want to change to the new pin. It's been a while since I've made a switch.

Thank you John, I've just been waiting for this to be confirmed. Switching my SIM now. Again, thanks for the help!

You will still need to contact your carrier and cancel your BIS account for the old BB. Otherwise, whomever you give/sell it to will get your mail and can't set it up to get theirs.

The BIS site will not automatically ask you if you want to change the PIN (at least on TMo it has not in the past when I changed BBs). You will need to sign in to your account and setup internet or BlackBerry mail, and you will see a link to Change Device.

That's not true. If you transfer the BIS account to the new BB it frees up the old BB (since there's no longer a BIS account tied to the old BB). In such cases there's no need to delete the BIS account and you don't have to deal with your carrier --ssnxp, you can use this method in your situation since you're switching to a new BB.
