Default Trackball Review

Is it just me, or does anyone else hate the texture to the trackball? I tried it out in a Cingular store and I must say, it's such a horrible feeling. I know this may seem weird, but when I use it, it makes my thumb feel weird.

I roll it with my pinky.

No, it doesnt cause me any weird feeling, eventhough it gets darker day by day, indeed i like it better, because it matches my black pearl perfectly.

I think it's fine. I thought at first I wouldn't like it but as with anything, you get used to it after awhile and eventually it's not bad at all.

Nope. A few minutes in the store is rarely indicative of anything IMO. You really need to try things for a while on a day-to-day basis. I wasn't exactly fond of the 8800's keyboard at first but I'm finding that I prefer it now. Some people accept change fine, some dont... If you're in the latter category then just be aware of it and go with what you prefer.

Just got an 8830 from Verizon. After messing with it for about 30 minutes last night I came to really enjoy the trackball. I had to break old habits of reaching up the side of the device with my thumb, looking for the trackwheel there. I think that me and the trackball will have a good relationship.

I went to a Cingular store yesterday too, and after checking out the new 8800, I disliked the ball too! lol there don't feel bad, you are not alone! I'm sure I would get used to it, but i just think it's too small.

the trackball that i tried in the store was absolutely horrendous. maybe it was damaged or something. it just felt horrible and i would have much rather seen it be plastic. it could also be some sort of smooth metal (this would raise cost up a lot tho). the metal look would give it a nice touch and when the backlit keyboard is on, it would make the metal track ball reflect the glow. it would look very sweet if you ask me.

all in all, there must have been a reason for going with that trackball. i am in ID and engineering and i know (as well as anyone else in these fields) that there is a reason for EVERYTHING and ABSOLUTELY EVERYTHING. they obviously did customer research and this is the best solution from their bag of possible solutions. using a smooth metal marble thing would add lots of cost, but i know i would choose it anyday over the current horrible feeling trackball.

that was a rant (if you didn't notice) and i just got out of a 4 hour committee meeting and i need lunch and it's 1:22pm.

peace

I think it takes getting used to. I moved from an 8700 to an 8300, and I still found myself going for the scroll-wheel on the side for a few days. Now I'm completely used to the feel of the trackball and really like the extra control with it.

I remember trying a friends 8800 a while back, and finding it difficult to use. Now that I am used to it, I think it is much better.

so at the mall i went to a verizon store while i was finish my DQ blizzard. i tried out the trackball on the 8800 and i still think it feels really weird. the texture of the little ball isn't smooth but it isn't rough...as you rub the ball with your thumb to navigate, it makes a feeling on your thumb as if it was vibrating or humming ,etc.

does anyone else seem to feel that the trackball feels a bit weird, and would feel better if it was a different material? maybe i'm just WAY to used to my 8700

any feedback would be great!

i've had a 8830 for 3 weeks now. the trackball feels fine to me. i find it to be a lot easier to use over the trackwheel. i think the demo units in the stores are sticky and dirty. you are not going to get the real feel using a demo unit that 100's of people play with while browsing the store selection.

i have also found the trackball to be a huge improvement when it comes to using the calendar application. it is wonderful to navigate up, down, AND left to right with little or no effort as i browse through my schedule.
