Has anyone tried this? when i used this method...the old emails replaced any in the new device, and thus the user was missing a couple of emails.

Yup -- and that's exactly how it works. A restore of Messages will overwrite (not append to) the contents of Messages on the BB. If you choose to do a restore you really need to make sure that no new email is received on the device before the restore (probably tricky with an EA on BES though).
