Yes, the blackberry's GUI may not be perceived as being as pleasant or exciting (or even as usable) as it could be... by those shopping around.
I agree completely with the posts by ArgonNJ and several others (who seem to agree with my own statements). Anyone who rejects the idea of a touchscreen as an ADDITION to the blackberry has some "issues". I would suggest to them to go back and use an old CGA DOS box without a mouse!
Blackberry is INDEED starting to look a lot like poor old Palm OS (as correctly mentioned by ArgonNJ), and they will need to start moving forward with some new technology. Adding a touch screen will make a lot of people VERY happy and the blackberry a whole lot easier to use (for most people). Nobody is suggesting that we take away the current input methods.
But, if you'd like for the blackberry to become an aging, pathetic looking system (like Palm OS) then just stick to your current way of thinking.

I guess that is why Palm is one of the most successful PDA/Smartphones out there. Wake up and smell the coffee please. You have not a clue about what you are talking about.

I myself will not own one when they do come out with a touchscreen, and im sure they will, keeping up with the Jones so to speak. Had one at work on our computer, didnt like it at all for some reason but then that was me, others really lked it.

I don't know, lots. There are as many Palm users as Blackberry users. While I agree the stability isn't there, the posters comment that there weren't any successful touchscreen Smartphones is what I was questioning. As far as a good back up goes, if the information was that important to me, then who's fault is it; 1) I let the battery drain to zero and 2) I don't have a current backup.

Then I guess you will be getting a Win Mobile device then. Inclusion of a touch screen is a pretty silly reason not to buy a device when the alternative is a buggy, bloated POS. And last time I checked even most Win Mobile devices are touch screen as well.

I'd like a source for your figures, they seem way out of the ball park.
Anyway as far as markets share goes I got this from a site:
In operating system terms, for the full year, Canalys estimates that Symbian had 67% share, up from 63% in 2005, Microsoft was in second with a slightly reduced 14% share, RIM came in third on 7% followed by Linux on 6% and ACCESS/PalmSource with the Garnet OS on 5%.

Cga doos I remember dos5 an ms dos 6 an windows 3.0. Oh man. That was at least 20 years ago. Even linux has evolved althogh they nned to up the anti on the processor. One of the. Common shortcomings I see with phonms is that there are no graphics acelerated LCD Over in Japan they hve phones that play games at over 30FPS. Video came companys like square enix have coded games for japenese phone that run that fast.

The one thing I do miss is the touch screen. Has there ever been any talk about BB's getting touch screens?
I tried searching for touch screen and got hundreds of hits, so if this is an old topic please forgive my newness.

i thought i read somewhere that RIM was going to stay with their wheel device on the side, and was not going to go towards the touch-screen

Well th thouch screen would prbably roll out with consumer models like the perl and curve. If sales were good enogh. An you had enogh requests from BES account for it. I think they would implement it.

So if I 'understand' correctly, you want to ADD a touch screen to go along with a keyboard? Just adds more crap for things to go wrong and increases the price or a item that functions fine as it is without it. What I don't understand is how it 'eases' productivity? The keyboard / trackball combination works fine. I would be hesitant myself to get the model with the thumb wheel on the side but again, I can't say much about it since I haven't tried it.
If RIM wants to add a model with touch screen I say fantastic. I could care less either way. Just as long as they create a BB without it.

Thats you in several other threads now you come in like you are kind S%$# acting like you know whats best for blackberry technology.
I think the fact the RIM doenst follow the crowd is what makes them a complete sucess. I guess the 9.9 million subscribers all want a touch screen device huh.

Am I new to the blackberry? Yes. Have I needed help with certain issues? yes. That has nothing to do with the topic we're talking about. Well, it does in ONE regard, if the blackberry wants to keep bringing in NEW customers, they'll have to start "getting with it" when it comes to technology. Just because I have needed help with technical questions and I'm a new user doesn't mean I'm an idiot and you're a genious. In fact, you've proven quite the opposite.
Like I said, go buy a PC without a mouse and without a GUI operating system (if you can find one) and have fun with it! I'm sure you would have been one of those people (back in the 80's) saying "the GUI slows the whole machine down!", and "who needs a mouse", etc.
Why anyone would not want a touch screen in addition to current features, I have no idea. Simple as that.

Im sorry thats just a bad example a pc and a BB are two totally different animals. Lets compare apples to apples.
See I feel exactly the opposite why would anyone want a touch screen. I guess we will have to agree to disagree.

Check this out... -
07-02-2007, 02:12 AM
Just to add slightly to the topic at hand...
It was revealed this week that RIM has just patented a new "roll back" keyboard that seems to work hand-in-hand with a touchscreen.
Now, keep in mind, this is one of several new keyboard designs that RIM has patented over the last several months. None of them have, as yet, turned up on a new BlackBerry, and there's no guarantee they ever will. But it IS interesting, in that it shows that RIM has at least explored the idea of maybe incorporating a touch screen at some point in the future. Very interesting.

Let me stoop to your level, and call you an misinformed idiot, clueless moron, who has his head his ass cause he thinks palm is sucessful.
And it's not successful, when talking about customer satisfaction, number of users, product quality, and company profits.

I guess I really touched on a sensitive topic for BB users. I am not advocating for BB to only have touch screen devices, I know that there are people who are very happy with the scroll wheel and the trackball. I actually like the trackball. I didn't know if I would get used to it after having a 5 way navigator for so long, but it is actually very easy to use. I wish it scrolled farther but I am still learning the ins and outs of a BB.
My real question was, has BB said anything about ever offering touch screens on their PDA's at all. I for one would like to have one that was in support of the keyboard. If you type any long messages, or docs, I found it easier to be able to touch on the screen where I wanted to edit something rather than having to scroll down to it and then move the cusor to the word I was changing. It was just very easy for me.
Any way, I was just curious to see if anyone knew of upcoming BB's and what options they might have.

17 years ago, to be more precise.
My comment: I don't want a TREO-style touchscreen in a BlackBerry. However, I may be open to an Apple-style touchscreen in a Blackberry, given these conditions: "If touchscreen technology ever comes to BlackBerry, I'd like it to be idiot proof, accident-tap-proof, fumble-proof, and I'd like to be able to disable the touchscreen feature. And please don't remove the buttons or trackball/trackwheel from a BlackBerry -- I still want an easy-access non-retractable [physical] thumb keyboard!"
[Note: I'd like to use the touchscreen only for: Cursor location, icon selection, writing diagrams, panning a Google Map, panning/zooming a webpage, etc. It could even be a optional removable layer, if need be -- like a replacement BlackBerry casing front-half with a built-in touchscreen option. And perhaps intuitive/easy to disable, so that it's safer/easier to use while driving without worrying about touchscreen fumbling -- maybe a wakeup signal like a triple-tap to briefly temporarily activate a touchscreen mode, or other innovative fumble-proofing method -- the UI wizards can hopefully dream up something that won't be bothersome)
Again: I don't want the physical keyboard to go.
Because programmers are not perfect, I do hope that touchscreens don't arrive to BlackBerry, but if it has to arrive -- please design it properly (Apple style careful UI design -- I'm no Apple zealot, I never owned Apple, but I do at least appreciate their UI design methodologies as a programmer myself). And go horizontally in the market (offer touchscreen/touchscreenless models -- like offering both SureType/QWERTY models -- Thank you RIM)
I reiteriate: I DO NOT WANT A TREO-STYLE TOUCHSCREEN -- ugh!
(No offence to Treo users and they are good devices in their own right -- but that kind of touchscreen is too fumble-prone compared to new-generation touchscreen technologies)
This is my opinion only though -- but you got to keep an open mind.
Remember, RIM continued to offer QWERTY even after introducing SureType. Who says RIM can't offer both touchscreen and touchscreenless phones?
Remember, You haven't tried touchscreens unless you've tried newer touchscreen technology (Treo=older touchscreen technology)
Remember, I don't really like touchscreens either, but I have an open mind to their use...
Remember, BlackBerry used to be terrible to some of you and now some of you love them where you didn't before. (same can be said for almost anything that improves significantly). And some of you used to hate first-generation voice dialing but like the improved voice dial (at least on some different cellphones that do it much better -- not necessarily BlackBerry's voicemail which is still first-generationish in ways). Just examples only -- but my point is: Who says touchscreen can't improve from where they are?
Yada, yada...
___
Anyway, yes -- everyone please stay civil.
Don't turn this into a holy war, please.
