Pin messages are messages sent directly to the bb. Not like email messages. every phone has a pin message.

Your PIN is something that identifies all blackberries. Everyone has a different one, kind of like a serial number. You can use this to send messages to other BB folks and they can reply, kinda like texting with BB, just for BB.

I believe its free, don't quote me on that though, I have Nextel, and I haven't seen any charges for it, but I got unlimited everything.

It comes out of your blackberry data bucket...it's not billed per-message like SMS

since we are one this topic of PIN messaging. does this number stick with the BB, regardless of activation? so what I am saying is, if I had an unactive BB with a PIN number that number will still remain the same regardless of activation.

Correct. Just like the VIN of a car, it doesn't change.

Yes.
I would recommend doing a search of your address book to find your fellow blackberry users, and sending them a message informing them of your new PIN.

If someone bought a used Blackberry, yes, that would be the case.
I do think however that if you were to receive a refurbished model under warranty repair, it has a new PIN. I had 3 replacements and never had a "strange PIN" come in.
I would also never recommend buying a used Blackberry...just because the warranty is so crucial!
