ok jc, I'm going to make a couple simplistic and seemingly dumb suggestions, but try it and see. I have no idea what the glitch is, so--

You've tried other tones for your husbands SMS, and that doesn't work. Have you tried changing the tone left for the general callers?

For fun, let's try this: delete your husband's contact again. Pull the battery and reboot. Set up a contact and profile/exception for him again, BUT this time, name it something TOTALLY different. Rather than whatever you have been naming that contact (let's say John Doe), this time name it Joe Schmoe or whatever. Test it. What happens?

You know, it hit me as I posted that just now, I have read somewhere that while voicemail notifications ARE SMS messages, basically--they don't really come as SMS messages from THAT contact. They come from your carrier.

I am thinking--if I read your conrundrum correctly, that is the problem: The voicemail SMS comes the carrier and is using the general SMS profile and is overriding any exception.

I wonder.

thanks everyone...will try all your suggestions today. JSanders, I think you may be right about the override.

Funny thing, last night hubby called and left message. The tone was normal beep, even though his SMS is a ringtone. It's *ss backwards.

As I understand jc72, it's the other way around... her husband's exception is overriding the general profile. But in reading through the thread, it's a bit confusing. Maybe she can help clear it up.

jc... you say, "When I don't have a profile for my husband, you would think it would play another tone from a profile, but noooooooo..."

JSanders is right in that the tone you'll hear for a voice message isn't caller specific. So it wouldn't play a another tone from a profile... it would play the tone that you have setup for SMS messages in the main profile (in your case, "Loud.") So, in short, if you use the Loud profile and have "excited beep" as your tone for SMS, this should be what you'll hear for any voicemail notification. Even with 17 exceptions that have individual SMS tones selected, it shouldn't change the voicemail notification...which should be "excited beep." Your exceptions will only apply to incoming text messages from those 17 contacts.

So, the question is... is the SMS tone set for your husband's exception the same tone that's set in the Loud profile for SMS? Other than that, Klotar's suggestion isn't bad. Newer model husbands come out much more frequently than BBs. In fact, I hear there're husbands now with Wi-Fi, GPS and 3G!

No it isn't. Today however, everything is working right so far. Maybe just turning off my phone last night helped?

Who knows?

Why is it set up this way?

Also I noticed that after I got everyone set up, I went ahead and changed the Loud profile for a specific ringtone, which then defaulted all of the 17 exceptions to that ringtone, instead of the ones I had for each exception. i just had to go through and change all of them back, but now I don't want to change that main ringtone EVER AGAIN.

thanks for all of your help, everyone. I'm sure when the next full moon hits, the wind blows a bit harder, or one of my kids jumps on the trampoline, I will be back whining about my freaking ringtones. (in about 2 hours )

Because AT&T doesn't send out a specific voicemail alert to your phone based on who left the message. It's just a generic "flag" letting you know that you have voicemail waiting. With the exception of "visual voicemail," I don't believe any carrier here in the U.S. does that.

With most of my other phones, at least I could set a separate tone (for all, not individuals) for SMS and VOICEMAIL. The BBs appear to "clump" these together.

and the wind blew....

I could work this to my advantage. I could turn it into a drinking game. Everytime hubbys info plays for someone else, I could drink.

Yea, or just delete the hubby from the BB and let him have a generic tone like all the others, lol.

Is he really that exceptional?

lol....

Yeah, i think so!

However, now its just drving me crazy. The principal of it, you know? (many would call it a control issue ) If it was a different persons info that was causing the issue, it would still make me want to fix it.

I am sure it is some silly thing that I am missing. But i have gone over everything.

I can't get this to work on my 8830. Do I need to talk to Verizon?

Verizon hasn't been able to help me at all.

The one CSR didn't even know how to do the profiles/exceptions and he has a BB.

Not sure how Verizon would be of help for this workaround. Describe what you did and what didn't work. I don't have an 8830 in front of me right now but it ought to work... unless you have a connection with jc's husband who, we know, is haunted.

I did the steps outlined in Post #3 in this thread. I'm trying to get a special ringtone not only for phone calls from a friend in Colorado but also any text messages that she sends me.

I was suggesting that you post the exact steps you performed and what didn't work. Also, make sure that you don't have a prior exception for this friend (for instance, if you had set a custom ringtone prior to trying this.)

It's hard to know what might've gone wrong without more specifics.

Thanks, the custom ringtone was screwing me up. I removed it and reset the profile and it works like a charm.

Glad you got it working. It's a nifty tip that can come in handy in certain circumstances. Just a good thing that your "friend in Colorado" doesn't curse your BB like "some other people."

I'm baaaack...

So after leaving everything alone for a bit, and not letting it drive me nuts I figured something out....

Whoever is the last person to text or call seems to be the default ringtone for the rest of the calls, message indicator, and texts that come in until somone else contacts the BB that is set up with a ringtone, then that persons info. is defaulting.....
