Default International Data Roaming Problem

Please Login to Remove!

I am traveling in China right now.

Landed in Beijing, and the data roaming worked perfectly with China Mobile.

However, when I got to Jinan, Shandong province, the data Roaming signal changed to GSM signal with CHINA MOBILE. I have re-scanned, manual selected China Mobile many times, and restarted many times, it did not work.

Called T-Mobile tech support, it did not solve it either.

Anybody has similiar experience, and any tips to get the data signal (GPRS) rather than GSM?

Thanks!

It's possible that Shandong province doesn't have GPRS.

Interesting to know it works in Beijing though.

You might be right. Beijing as the capital of China should without doubt has the data GPRS service, so is Shanghai...

We'll see if I get response from Tmobile.

I just wanted to make sure that it is sometimes possible that the carrier will have GSM only in one region, and both GSM and GPRS in other regions in the same country.

I don't see why that couldn't happen - we have the exact same thing with some operators here in the backwoods of the United States!

My Office BlackBerry is a Nextel model. When I'm at my house, data services don't work. I get a message saying I'm outside the Nextel data service area.

I'm totally serious!

There will be areas where an operator doesn't have the equipment for GPRS/EDGE whenever you travel. It happened to me when I was in the UK last, believe it or not. There were parts of the UK that O2 didn't have GPRS in, or maybe there was an outage, I was only in Rugby/Coventry for a day or two. This was as recently as 3 years ago (Though I was able to roam onto BT Cellnet and get data if memory serves)

P.S. thanks for the word that your Bberry works in China. That rocks.

Sometimes I have to sit back and really appreciate how cool some of this stuff really is, I take it for granted so often.

I think the Asian carriers only offer roaming on the 1900 band you might be out of coverage area? Just a thought...

May be just a typo, but in China I believe they use 900 MHz GSM.. 1900 is in North America only.

I was in SE Asia a few weeks ago and had a few instances where I traveled by train and went from GPRS -> GSM and then back to GPRS later. Obviously the GPRS footprints do not match the GSM footprints (unlike T-Mobile in the US).
