Default SMS/Email distribution list?

Please Login to Remove!

Is there a way to create an SMS group or email distribution list?
Sometimes I need to contact my coworkers via SMS or email and I'm stuck on the tedious "Add Recipient" one after another. This is a chore when I have to communicate with over 10 contacts.

In contacts, open menu, select new group, and go from there.

Seems like you can only select contacts that have an email address in their profile. I was hoping to be able to create a group based off phone numbers for SMS messages since 9/10 times people check their phones faster than email.

Even with the Email Group created, you can't go around the tedious chore of "Add Contact" to the To: field. You have to add each contact individually. A shame considering I could do this with my old Motorola Razr, and the BB is far more advanced than that.

Nope, you can definitely create a group with members only using phone (mobile) numbers (or just email addresses). If they have both mobile number and email address, you need to choose which one is used for the group...so in effect you can have email groups and SMS groups (tho they will both look the same) and you can't really mix the two types because that doesn't make sense when you compose an SMS (or email). Likewise if the contact has a BB PIN you can select that and create a PIN group.

Not sure what you're doing, but it all works OK for me

Always used email in my groups. Good to know SMS can be done.

On the OP's second issue, I don't follow that either. You create a group name and then individually add contacts. You can later add to and delete from the group and save as modified. But to send to the group, you just select the group from contacts into the to field and send, and message goes out to all in the group.

Here's what I'm going through...
  1. Go to Address Book
  2. Select Create Group
  3. Name my Group
  4. *No Addresses* is displayed
  5. Select Add Member
  6. Options available for first member I want to add is: Filter, New Address, View, Edit, Options, Cancel.

The above is for a contact without an email. Now if the contact has an email, in the drop down menu displays "Continue.," and it displays the name under the newly created group.

So the ability to create a group based on phone number only isn't there for me. *confused*

Same for me at least. No continue if no email entry for the contact. I'm on OS 4.1. If there is way to do group for SMS I don't see it.

No, address groups were intended for email.

You can do SMS groups if you have them entered as email addresses, and that is what many people do (i.e., "1234567890@tmomail.net".

Here's a few more: Email to SMS Gateway

Ah ok. That makes sense. I'll go ahead and convert them into the sms email. It'll save me tons of time. Thanks.

I also just tried using "teleflip" again.

For sending a text message, you can put any cell phone number in front of "teleflip.com" and teleflip will determine the carrier to which it should go.

i.e., "1234567890@teleflip.com" The SMS will come from "501" in the message list, not your name.

Just another alternative.

It must be a 4.2-only feature or maybe a 4.2.1 feature. I can definitely do SMS groups on my 4.2.1 Pearl. What OS versions do you 8700 guys have?

JSanders, I would think you could do this on your 8800, but maybe not. It lets you pick email addresses or phone numbers on mine. I don't like the SMS gateway route personally, and teleflip just flat out doesn't work when I try it.

Yes, it does on my 8800. I guess it is OS dependent.

Teleflip works for when I have rarely used it. Like I said, just another alternative.

Yeah I think that's the problem. Isn't 4.2 available for the 8700? That should fix this.

Yes, you can definitely do SMS groups on my Pearl (T-Mobile running v4.2.0.51). The mobile number does not have to be defined as an email address, just a normal mobile number. And like I said, you can do groups based on PIN numbers also, if the contact has a PIN number listed in the details.
