Default BIS with OWA

Please Login to Remove!

Hi,

I have a BB Curve linked to the BIS 2.3 service from O2 UK. I have set up my gmail account (works perfectly) and I have now set up my Exchange 2003 account via OWA.

The account set up fine and emails appear on the BB after a delay. If I send a mail from my BB, the mail appears in the Sent View on Exchange. However, if I delete a mail in Exchange, the deletetion does not come down to the BB or unread marks. I have set wireless reconcile to on. I have checked that the BB is set to delete on mailbox and handheld, I have also checked on BIS and the tick to delete messages is ticked.

Anybody have any ideas on this?

Have you set to delete handheld and account (Exchange) in BIS and on your device? There are separate settings for each account.

Hi,

Yes - I have gone into the OWA account on the Blackberry and set the option to delete on handheld and mailbox.

BIS via OWA is only one-way sync, so the reason this isn't working is because it's not a supported feature. Your deletions/reads/unreads in Exchange are not going to show up on your BB. Only changes made on your BB are going to be reflected in Outlook, but not the other way around. As far as deleting emails on your BB and having them delete in Exchange, I don't remember if that works or not. I had this setup but it was back on 2.0, so I'm not sure if 2.3 syncs deletions with OWA. I know it does with Gmail and Yahoo.

Either way, it's not going to work from Exchange to the BB.

Hmm, thanks guys. That explains the behaviour however when I checked on the RIM Knowledge Base, on DOC ID: KB05133, for V2.3 of BIS it says:

Note: With BlackBerry Internet Service 2.3, integrations will now support full 2-way reconciliation of deletions, both from the BlackBerry device to the mailbox, and from the mailbox to the BlackBerry device.

In the table of email products with full sync - OWA has yes in all the boxes.

So do we think that this is incorrect then?

UPDATE

I have been monitoring my Curve, and it looks like IT IS doing a reconcile from Outlook down to the Blackberry. It does take a lot longer than BES does, (around 2 hours) but it seems to be working.

This is pretty cool to get email from my work Exchange account at the weekends when I am not carrying my BES enabled 8800. I can delete and sent mails from the BB appear in the sent items folder in Outlook too.

I am monitoring it now to make sure that it is doing this, but it seems to on test mails I have been watching. Looks like BIS 2.3 rocks with OWA.

I hadn't seen anything about enhancements with OWA on 2.3 until now. Everything I have seen has been Gmail and Yahoo. That's good if it works though. I had mine back on 2.0 and I know it didn't work then. Even on BES it takes much longer to sync from Exchange to BB than it does the other way around. The 2 hours really wouldn't be of much use to me. I would've never waited that long.

I even hate the 10 minute delay on BES for the changes to be applied to the BB!

Well It definately does work! -I have been monitoring this and although it takes a couple of hours it does reconcile with Outlook. So the results seem to be:

Receive mail from Exchange OWA - Approx 15 mins
Send and delete on Blackberry - instant (and shows in Outlook sent/deletes)
Reconcile items deleted in Outlook - approx 2 hours

I agree that for a primary business mail tool - this is not much use and I have my 8800 on BES for that. However, for weekends etc to keep in touch still, I think this is pretty good!

It works 2-way for me too, which is great, although it takes a loooong time for deletes to propagate from Exchange to the handheld.

It seems greedy, but I still have a wishlist that:
  1. Deletes from Exchange and immediately propagated to the handheld, or that "Reconcile Now" forces this to happen
  2. If I read a mail in Outlook its read status is propagated to the handheld
  3. A long shot, but it would be great if I could file messages in folders from the handheld
