Default Software configurations on BES

Please Login to Remove!

Hi

I'm new to Blackberrys and am still trying to setup an enterprise server at work.

I have the server up and running but am wanting to push applications out wirelessly. I have followed the help files for setting up the Software Configurations in the Blackberry Manager, but I can not get the applications to show.

I have setup the following Device Software Location:

\\bes\Research In Motion\

(I couldn't get it to point to Program Files\Common Files\Research In Motion\Shared\Loader Files\ as the help file - Adding software to a network drive suggests)

So, in the above location I have added the contents of the file I want to deploy (sametime messaging software) which includes the .alx and .cod files as it suggests, but nothing appears in my Application Software list on the BES..

See attachments added..

Also, can anyone confirm if the Blackberry Enterprise Messenger supports Lotus Sametime?

Thanks in advance..
Andy

Andy,

After you place the applications in the Shared location as you've done, you need to re-index so that BES picks up the newly added software and makes it available to push out to end users.

Open up a command prompt, and change directory to
X:\Program Files\Common Files\Research In Motion\Apploader

Then enter the command
loader.exe /index
and hit enter.

This will re-index the newly added software.

After that, it should show up in the Software Configuration screen to be selected for delivery.

For future reference... you might consider putting your apps (.alx and .cod) files into subfolders within the Shared directory, and then set the location of the apps to that particular Shared directory. It'll be much cleaner if you start adding a lot of apps.

The shared resource called 'Research In Motion' on server named 'bes' .... does that share point to the the C:\Program Files\Common Files\Research In Motion folder?
Have you set the proper permissions for that share, as to allow BES to read from it?

Yes the share points to C:\Program Files\Common Files\Research In Motion

I've set full access to everyone for this folder and every containing folder.

I have tried putting the application files in all the folders present in research In Motion folder, but still no luck.

What do you have setup?

Your problem is that the Share is set to Read-only.
You need to provide BES with write permissions (just give Full Access), as BES needs to modify the contents of that folder during the the indexing process.

Hmm.. It was originally setup will full access, I read in the instructions to just give it read access.. Anyway, I have put it back to full access (see screenshot) but still not working.

I'm reading in the user guide I need to install the Blackberry Device Software (see screenshot) I havent done this as I dont appear to have that file.. But I notice the Apploader is already installed in C:\Program Files\Common Files\Research In Motion\AppLoader Is this the same thing? If not can you point me as to where I can download this file?

Sorry if i'm being thick, and I do appriciate your help on this!

Update!

I've installed the Blackberry pearl OS software and it has appeared in the list of applications (see screenshot) However, any other application I add, even if it is in the same location as the Pearl OS files, doesn't appear..

Why are you installing the handheld OS? Be very careful. You should NOT be doing this.
Handheld OS files cannot be pushed out via software configuration.

I'm more inclined to think that there is a problem with the actual Sametime software you are trying to push. Maybe a corrupt .alx file, or .cod files.

Try adding some other applications to see if they behave the same way.

Well.. No idea what it is talking about when it says 'Device Software Installation file' I've uninstalled it now though.

I've also redownloaded the sametime installation files, I have also tried the files for a free vnc app as well, but these dont show up either.

SOLVED - Spoke to technical support and it was my fault I wasnt extracting the files out of the Sametime zip properly so it wasnt putting some of the files in a folder. But it also didnt seem to be creating the 2 extra files that are necessary when you run the loader.exe/indexer command, which im not sure why.

Anyway.. solved now, thanks for your tips penguin3107

I have the same exact problem as you, I am trying to push the BB Messenger for SameTime but it just refuses to appear in the list of applications.

I looked at the screenshot of your directory and mine looks identical. Can you please tell me which files I am missing because I keep indexing and reindexing the directory but nothing happens.

Thank you very much

Simple fix. I had the same isssue as you until I did the following:
1. extract all files in the zip to a folder X:\sametime
2. copy X:\sametime to your applications folder
3. loader.exe /index
4. create new software config.

note my screenshot. hope this helps!
